Seriously, as an aircraft photo'er, I use the 16-35VR almst exclusively for static shots.
Outside, well- no issues of course. I usually have a CPL on it though, so that costs a bit of light.
Indoors, and usually a days use is both inside and out, it's a different story. For aircraft inside museums or hangars, the light is usually second rate. I'm going to be shooting at f8 to get good depth of field and still got my CPL on, as it's a pain taking it off/on without getting dust inside.
So, bump up the ISO to say 1000 or1250 on the D700 and rely on the VR and 'long lense' technique (with a WA!) to try and keep the pix sharp.
