To me the impact of VR has always been a bit like that of a good monopod.

VR may perhaps enable you to hand hold a 200m lens at 1/25th, provided the subjects were reasonably still, but you could almost get away with that sort of of shutter speed that anyhow with a wider lens, especially if you lifted the mirror before pressing the trigger.

VR can add to the weight of a lens too...
