Thank you for your response.

I took the lens into my local camera shop. They diagnosed it as a "loose element", and described it as a common problem. The element (maybe more than one?) is held in place with a threaded retaining ring.

I left it with them for CLA, including tightening the offending retaining ring.

I hope they are right. I'll know "the first week in December".

BTW, I bought the lens used, locally. Perhaps carrying the lens in the car created vibration which loosened the ring. I'm reasonably sure I did not hear the rattle when I used it in March.
