James,

I think you are right on track. The D800 is far more sensitive to camera movement. Use MUP or delay shutter on a tripod; or VR lenses or keep the shuttler speed up when hand holding. This will significantly increase the quality of the image.

I'm sure there are people who can hold the D800 steady at slower shutter speeds and get excellent results. I'm not one of them.
