I think you should ask yourself how often you will use the lens, and is it worth double the cost of the 1.8D. Does the size and weight matter, and can I get the same results in Photoshop. If you spend time on forums, there seems to be a big push these days that everyone needs the newest or the best gear to take family photos, when often gear that is one notch down can be very capable.
The best suggestion in this post is try it and see if the differences are really worth the extra money to you. I don't use the prime very often so I am happy with the 85mm f1.8D; I think it's an exceptional value. I have shot with the 85mm f1.4 AIS lens, but even that needs to be stopped down a bit for the best results. Another question you may want to ask yourself is what aperture will I really use most of the time.
