I too just picked up a 105mm Nikon for macro shots and was able to capture crisp clean macro images at F4 1/60 at about 1.5'. This lens is one expensive puppy to keep stored in your camera bag so you may also want to also explore the 60mm Nikon and 90mm Tamron before you decide. I was able to rent one from a local camera shop for a short time and took a few shots before making my final decision. For general shots I prefer my 18-200 but the 105 allows me to keep enough distance away from the subject as to not be disruptive and still capture the moment. Overall I would say the 105mm is a really great lens that takes super clear macro images.
