Try a 28mm f/2 AIS. It's good at all distances. If you are into ultra close WA shots with bright lights in the frame the 20mm f/3.5 AIS is an excellent performer. It's soft at the corners and it's infinity performance is not good at all, but close up - wow. The 28mm f/2 AIS is good all over and with the sun in the frame.
I just bought a 28mm f/2 AIS after selling my original in a weak moment. It arrived yesterday and unfortunately the sun is behind a bunch of rain clouds right now. I may be able to post some near dark images that I took a few hours ago later this evening.

WHOA!!!! The exif data indicates a 20mm lens. That's clearly wrong - the lens is a 28mm f/2 AIS. I must have made a data entry in the D700 Non-CPU lens data. My apologies for the confusion.
