I am finding the grey market offering for the Nikkor 300mm f/4 ED-IF AF-S is significantly cheaper than the USA waranty offering - about $250 less. I understand the grey market implications regarding warranty and being barred from services at Nikon USA.
My questions are specific to the durability of the lens and possibilities for repair at authorized shops other than Nikon USA.
1)Based on your ownership experience, is this a durable lens that would most likely not konk out within the 5 year USA warranty period?
2)If at anytime during my ownership I need to have this lens repaired, are there trusted authorized service centers in the US that I could employ to work on my grey market lens?
Essentially, The extra $250 for the USA version results in a cost of $50/year to have the 5 year warranty. That's the cost/benefit I am weighing.
