It is slower focussing that the f/2.8 lenses. On my D700, the 28-300 often seems to take a second to "think" before it does any kind of focussing. Not sure why that is. No other Nikon body and lens I have owned has had that behaviour. It is almost as if the lens goes to sleep and has to wake up sometimes.
