May I suggest you read the excellent review by Thom Hoganhttp://www.bythom.com/rationallenses.htm and scroll to "oddballs" at the bottom. Here he discusses Tele-converters and lens conbinations.

I have read that the X2 TCIII is miles ahead of the older TCII on the 70-200mm and just about any Nikon lens.
