My philosophy is that a careful focus tuning effort, although not shared by all here, is a core ongoing technique with continuous re-evaluation based on real world images in ensuring one gets every lp/mm out of this lens. I don't look at it as a "once and done" effort but rather an ongoing journey with me and my equipment.
Another core technique I consider paramount is fast shutter speeds at approximately 1.5 * focal length plus use of VR for handholding. And if my subject is moving my shutter speeds only go up from there!
Of course I ALWAYS use a lens hood too.
Aperture sweet spots are f4 and f5.6. But I've been pushing the limits with thousands of images at f2.8 and I've been very very satisfied!
I do see the results of the above in my shooting and constantly re-evaluate with an aim to check for problems and continue improving my technique. It is a great lens and I'm sure you'll enjoy it! For me the 70-200 II is absolutely the core of my kit and combined with two other key lens provides me great versatility.
