But in the range 250-300 it becomes soft. Not too bad as follows from the review. But in my simple test I took two photos of the same object from the same distance at 250 and 300. Then I cropped both to isolate the same object. So I had more information from the 300mm shot than from 250mm one. Still the 250mm crop had more details. It was a strong suggestion for me to use this lens only up to 250mm zoom.
After fully realizing this limitation I looked into 300mm and 400mm primes (90% of the time I use super-zoom at the maximum magnification). I ended up getting legacy 400mm Tokina ATX lens for just over $200.
Bottom line, Nikon 70-250mm VR is a great sharp lens, but if you are primarily looking at 300mm zoom level maybe you should consider alternatives.
