I believe that you have an excellent lens in the 70-300 VR. It does a very good job with AF and the VR is really good, especially for the price. I had the 70-300 G and upgraded to the VR and as you mentioned there was a world of difference. I eventually sold the VR so I could get a 70-200 F/2.8 and am satisfied with it. However, the overall qualities of the 70-300 VR, much less weight too, made it an ideal walk about lens that I do miss at times. Again, it is a great lens and you'll really enjoy the IQ that it produces.
