From what I have heard from talking with camera techs and some pros, Tokina and Tamron contract and use proprietary Nikon technology for "D" compatibility. Sigma uses their own technology.
Also, you can always use non "D" AF lenses on even the most advanced Nikon camera such as the new N80 and F100, and the pro F5.
