I am particularly happy with the Tamron 28-200 and got 4-5 of them off Ebay for under $50. A couple work fine and are on my D90s for standard. Another couple seem to hunt for focus and need Manual Focus to make them work. They are on my 6006 and N65 etc.
Only problem with the motor lenses they are expensive, you can find a 18-55 or a 55-200 Nikon for around $100 but anything else is $200+.
I had a D40 and D60 and gave them to my kid. I use D50s and D90s and love them to pieces.
