The reason it likely is not working right is that you need to adjust the lens aperture to the value you desire to use. You can't just leave it locked at f/22 all the time as you stated. you're probably outside the metering range. The N90s does not work that way, like the newer cameras do. You need to set the aperture on the lens. It's more like the Nikon EM than like the D200 in that respect.

See if that helps. Then again, it shouldn't be a dark viewfinder. Something must be amiss.
