"Active D-Lighting"

I see so many fabulous images here and wonder about those that are taken during high contrast times of day. Do any of you use the Active D Lighting feature? I tried it once and found my shots got kinda 'muddy', but not sure I used it correctly. Active D Lighting states that it is to be used for high contrast situations.
