i recently purchased a used 300mm f4 afs lens. when it focuses it squeaks. although after i played with it for 20min or so, its gone. the lens is from an estate and is barley used (it still had the Styrofoam inserts around the lens!) it had obviously sat a long time as the bag/case was covered in dust.
any thoughts? i would imagine it should be ok, just needed a bit of exersize to get it going....
Hello, i just very recently bought this lens as well from a fellow Nikonian. Had the identical noise you have described. I brought it over to the Nikon Service Center here in Los Angeles for a check. AFS motor needs to be replaced a $241.00 fix. Luckily, we split the cost. the lense has been serviced, clean, new motor, and lens calibrated re-aligned. Works perfect. With the repair, cost me $875.00 like NIB condition. Good luck!
i think mine is ok now though, the squeak went away fast and it was working fine the whole time, and now sounds like it should too.
anyone else have this happen with an afs lens? the fact your motor needed to be replaced scares me! i still have the opportunity to return mine. im going to take it hiking tommorrow and give it a good work out. see what happens.
I just recently had squeeky AF-S lens syndrome. My 18-200 began squeeking just after getting off an airplane, but then went away a few hours later. Perhaps large changes in temperature, pressure, and humidity can cause this to happen for many cases.
