Guys, what is the secret here? I have looked at the pictures in great detail. For the life of me, I can't get the ring around the rubber part of the eyepiece and have it fit onto the dk-17m. Do I need to get a 500 pound hammer? What is the secret? a llot of force?

Thanks Bill, I had read that, but there is no way thet the little metal ring he speaks of will fit over the rubber eyecup. I have even used a lot of force to try and force it with no luck. I wonder if they have done some kind of design change on the d17m. Right now I am not using either of the metal rings that came with the DK19 and it seems to fit very well.

Post 7 here describes how to do it - http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=201331.

That's the method I used on my D700, D3x and D800E.

(PS. There are some pics of the parts in post 44 here - http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=357240&page=5).

Thank you Simon, your post did the trick, I feel like an idiot, went together like a piece of cake. The secret words were in the first part of the instructions. Make sure the rubber piece covers the white lettering on the DK17M. Once you put the rubber piece on correctly, it all comes together.

thanks again

Dennis,

I had read both the dpreview thread and the nikoncafe thread before several times but for the life of me could not figure out how to put the thin ring over the rubber cup.

But thanks to your words "Make sure the rubber piece covers the white lettering on the DK17M", I was able to complete this task with ease. This was the trick that I missed while reading both the other threads.

I am a happy camper now.

Wishing "Seasons Greetings and a Happy New Year" to you, your family and the entire Nikonians community.

Pravin.

The link in post #3 above no longer works so here is my 'how to' in case anyone else needs it.

1. Close eyepiece shutter.

2. Unscrew the DK-19 assembly and separate it into three parts:

a) the rubber cup
b) the glass eyepiece
c) the slim metal collar

3. Separate the DK-17M into three parts:

d) the glass magnifying eyepiece
e) the slim rubber rim
f) the deep plastic collar

4. Fit a) to the rim of d) so that it covers the white lettering.

5. Slide on c) so that it locks the rubber onto the rim. A tad fiddly but it fits.

6. Slide on f) and squeeze the new assembly together so that the thread on d) protrudes as far as possible.

7. Screw assembly into viewfinder thread on camera. Tighten but don't overdo it.

8. Open eyepiece shutter.

The above method leaves parts b) and e) unused.

Simon,

The NikonCafe link I provided has the images of the various pieces.

The DK-19 sold in US, comes only in 2 pieces.
1. Rubber eye cup
2. Slim metal collar

Thanks,
Pravin.

Yes, but the instructions I wrote assume that the DK-19 is already fitted to the camera so part b) refers to the camera's standard glass eyepiece.

Simon,

Thanks for that explanation.
