You may recall that the Commander Mode in my new D800E was inoperable, out of the box.

Following its trip to Nikon, I picked it up today and learned that they replaced the Commander Mode circuit board.

Everything checks out perfectly now.

I suspect that the complexity of modern digital cameras is such that factory testing of all possible functions and states prior to shipment is impractical. Thus, we the consumers are the final testing agents.

In fairness I will comment that this is the first digital camera out of all those I have purchased over the years that failed out of the box.

I really can't complain.

Glad to hear all is well now, Hal

My newest computer had to go back to its assembler three times.
Wrong (complicated) motherboard settings, cables getting disconnected when moving it back home, and what not.
I am now reloading all software for the second time.
Good we don't have to do that with our cameras, except maybe for firmware

Have a great time :-)

Oh, go ahead and complain anyway, Hal. Computer and camera makers are always talking about the "out of box experience," and yours should have been better than that.

But I agree with you. I sent my D3 in for a quite expensive repair on an autofocus problem. It came back with a very nice, very complete CLA, but the problem was still there. It's on its way back now. But that's the first time in the decades I've been using Nikon stuff that something like this has happened. No outfit's perfect, but Nikon's close enough.

Pity it had to be the d800 that broke with tradition though. All's well, as they say.

Cheers

Hi:

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
I'm curious if they did they charge you for the repair? Did you have to pay to send it back?
Thank you.

Thanks for all the kind words of support.

I did not pay for anything, including postage to and from Nikon. I suspect, but do not know, that the dealer is reimbursed by Nikon for shipping charges.

I don't have the energy or motivation to get all upset about things I cannot control. Nothing is perfect.

My D800 has occasional operator malfunctions, but that is not covered under warranty. Shipping is also very costly, and no guarantee that the repairs will do anything...

Thanks for posting your fix. Enjoy that camera.

Wow, just wow! This is why I started building my own PCs (for personal use) ~8 years ago.

Hi HBB,
Do you know where the camera was sent to be repaired? LA or Melville?

Craig:

California ... I assume Los Angeles.

Turn around time was less than two weeks.
