In new interviews, two Nikon execs say all new production D800/800Es now are free of focusing flaws. After refusing five 800Es, I'll accept October 2 delivery from Amazon's new batch of arrivals. I know it's a truly great camera and I'm excited about photographing the brilliant Fall colors of New Mexico's Rio Grande aspens and cottonwoods.

Good luck with the new D800E!

Like you, I'm awaiting a D800E from Samy's Camera. Fresh shipment arrived about a week ago. Hopefully, we get the fixed ones.

I plan to evaluate the D800E with a star-chart method using 3 charts, one each for center, left and right focus points (live view vs. AF) and FoCal ver 1.6. From what I gather, this version works well on PCs.

Amazon is just now receiving an unexpected batch of 800E's. Just a few days ago Amazon asked me to confirm that I still want to remain on the wait list even though they had no idea when they'd get any more 800Es.

FYI: I just got a private email from a #1 pro reviewer who tells me there are four (4) D800/E assembly machines in Sendai and only one of these machines was improperly assembling out-of-focus cameras. One machine assembles only D800Es and it's always been OK. However, because of D800E backlog pressures, from time to time some D800Es were assembled on the defective machine. Makes sense to me.

Yes, that would appear to explain the seemingly random issues found with these cameras and why the majority seem to be OK. It's the best explanation I've heard so far.

Amazon is shipping my D800e today for delivery on Tuesday.

I will post the serial number and my auto focus test results. Presumably it is a recently manufactured D800E. I know that Amazon was not expecting a D800E shipment and Samy's also got some this week.

I checked yesterday a D800E at a local photo store they received 9/25 (3 days ago) and was fine, no AF issues. Probably is the same batch from Nikon that Amazon and others have received.

My D800E arrived with one day shipping this afternoon from Amazon. I was really surprised to get a shipping notice on Thursday! I have not opened it yet but hope it is from a new batch with no issues.

Seems Nikon shipped a bunch to the U.S. this week. I saw Crutchfield, Roberts, and Norman Camera all had (and maybe still have?) D800E's in stock this week. Ahem, not that I've been looking.

And hopefully all without focus issues.

I have read on other forums that serial number is no guarantee but one would hope the higher numbers are fresh batches with no issues.

In this case Nikon may know which serial numbers are affected. Maybe they will issue a recall for the affected cameras.

Hey, Bob, good luck with the new camera. Like you I recently purchased a D800E from a new shipment, but different supplier. I received it yesterday and did some testing for the asymmetric focus issue. The serial number is 3006XXX. The firmware is A = 1.00, B = 1.01, and C = 1.006.

Various tests were performed to determine if there were asymmetric focus issues. Overall, the camera is a keeper. If you would like more details of the testing conditions I just posted it here:

Thank you! I would bet serious $$ that this latest batch of D800Es is completely free of the focus issues that have preoccupied this forum for the last 6 months.

I've seen many reports that D800E S/N 3006XXX or higher are all OK free from the Left AF issue.

I'll test mine with Lens Align targets but I anticpate zero focus problems. This is exactly why I waited this long and turned down 5 or 6 earlier wait list D800Es.

See Thom Hogan's current post today on the inadequate repairs that were made on the early focus-challenged D800s and D800Es. Nikon has struggled mightily to find the cause and come up with a fix that really works. Nikon finally accomplished that daunting task but it has remained silent on the entire subject from Day One until now.

Nikon's silence is a disgrace but it matches perfectly the Japanese cultural flaws I observed on all my business and personal visits to Japan.

Why keep this entire focus discussion at the intellectual level of porridge?

I remain mystified by those who appear to excuse anything Nikon did wrong, profess to love their flawed cameras and are still saying shut up to any and all who probe this mess.

Read today's shocking Thom Hogan post. What Nikon did and is still doing is a disgrace that Nikonians should continue to discuss in depth.

You're missing my point, Bob

Discussing the problem is fine, saying that Nikon has been handling this one badly is OK too, but commenting about the cultural characteristics of a nation is a step too far, and is not what we like to see here.

Thanks for (I hope) understanding.

I suspect that many of the participants in this discussion have read the remarks posted on the LensRental blog regarding repair records of their cameras and lenses, but for those who have not, here is the link:
http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/09/lensrentals-repair-data-january-july-2012/comment-page-1#comments
R.C's perspective in this post and many others is that of an enthusiast-entrepreneur who buys and handles more photographic gear in a year than scores of us do in several lifetimes. As such, I regard his criticisms and kudos on a different level than the chatter that fills so many of our (albeit interesting) forums. His comments regarding Nikon's customer relations are very much in line with those coming from Thom Hogan and should give all of us Nikon users an incentive to register valid complaints regarding purchases and repairs as far up the Nikon administration chain as possible. Who knows why Nikon warranties are shorter in the US than in most, if not all, foreign markets. Have we been too docile regarding defective products and faulty repairs? Yes, I know -- early adopters and beta testing and all that, but really, look at the record. Tom Forker
