Hi,
I am very happy with my D800 and now I want to connect it to my new MacBook Air.
Under OS 10.8 I have installed ViewNX2 and some questions about this:
If I connect the camera, NikonTransfer starts and I can transfer pictures from camera to Mac. In ViewNX2, I can see the images. So far so good, I guess. I would expect the camera to show up as a device in Mac's Finder, but it doesn't. Is this correct or what am I doing wrong?
Now, I also installed windows7 under VM on the Mac. Very handy for programs that solely run under windows. If I connect the D800, I can choose to connect it to Windows or Mac. If I select Windows (under VM), I get error messages of not finding the right drivers. Any advice?
Thanks in advance! Hans

The Nikon D800 will not show up as a device in Finder, Desktop, etc. It will just transfer to whatever application you have mapped to it in Image Capture.

I cannot help you with the VM question. With my D7000, WinXP, running in Fusion I never had an issue. But fusion doesn't work since my upgrade to 10.8.

I don't know if the connection with the MacBook Air is different from my iMac, but when I put the CF card from my D800 in the card reader, the D800 does show up as both a device on the Desktop and in Finder.

Correct, but that's a different connection than what the original poster has. He has the CF/SDHC card in the camera and then attached the camera to the computer via USB. In this sequence reading the card directly from the camera, it doesn't show up.

When you take the card out, and put it in an external reader or directly into the Mac (depending on the card) it shows up in finder, desktop, etc.

This has been true for my D7000, D700, and now D800.

Thank you all for your responses.
"The Nikon D800 will not show up as a device in Finder, Desktop, etc."
Agrees with that I am seeing, so I am not doing anything wrong.
"but when I put the CF card from my D800 in the card reader, the D800 does show up as both a device on the Desktop and in Finder."
Indeed, that is correct. I can access the cards via a cardreader that way.
NikonTransfer2 sees cards as well as camera connected.
Regarding VM, it appears that VM Fusion is not compatible with USB3 ports connecting to Win7. So if I want to connect USB3 device to Win7 that way, I have to use a USB2 hub.
Reason for using this (D800 on Win7 via VM) is to be able to use FoCal software.

To confirm:
VM Fusion on Mac is not compatible with USB3 ports connecting to Win7.
I connected a USB2 hub in between the camera and the Mac and everything is fine.
Only needed if the D800 has to connect to Win7, not Mac OS.
