Are D800 cards slots written Simultaneously or Sequentially?

Are the SDXC and the CF cards written to simultaneously or sequentially when one is JPEG and the other NEF? If simultaneously, it would seem to write the JPEG to the slowest card used since it is a considerably smaller file, right? If sequentially, then it seems no speed advantage for JPEG on one and NEF on the other, right? Of course you may deem the split configuration of JPEG and NEF to be an in-camera safety back up.

The D800 camera does not know which is the slowest card that you have in the camera.

You can set up your D800 in different ways. One of the option is to write the RAW to the CF card and JPEG to the SD card or vice-versa or both types of files to the same card (CF or SD).

If your workflow needs both RAW and JPEG files, then set up to write the RAW to your fastest memory card (CF or SD) and the JPEG to your slower card (CF or SD).

For various threads that I have read on forums, it seems that the write is sequential from the buffer. So it will write to the primary card and then to your secondary card. If you have a slower card in one slot, it will significantly affect the speed during burst mode.

Read page 89 of your D800 Manual.

Thanks Pavin. Unfortunately page 89 does not answer the question and thus my posed question, however your reference to other forum postings may well be the answer ... such that when NEF and JEPG are desired for whatever reason, only write these to the same (faster) card and let the slower be the ovewrflow when the primary is full unless the speed decrease of the slower card for say the JEPG file is acceptable for the purpose of a backup if the faster card with the NEFs fails. Hopefully there is a confirmation of this knowlege and modus operandi within the forum members. I appreciate your respone.
