For those who have pre-ordered the D800(e) - what would you recommned on using for memory card, etc?

There seems to be two types of storage available, correct?

Thanks for the info.

I think this is a great question. I've just spent the last hour looking at 32gb CF and SDHC cards online and added a couple to a wishlist on Amazon.

I've not made my mind up yet but I'm thinking I'll use one for stills and one for backup/video, I don't even know if I'll use the video!
I've tried to keep my searches to fast transfer cards because of the bigger file size and video capabilities of the D800.

I have ordered the following in advance for my D800:

Lexar LECF1000X64G
64 GB PRO COMPACT FLASH CARD (1000x)

Lexar LESD133X128G
128GB Professional 133x SDXC Card

I haven't decided which I will use for stills or video, but these give me the flexibility to play either way.

I tend to look at my full picture, from camera to archive when selecting these things. I shoot 16GB cards typically, because I am able to archive 1 card per one BluRay, including the LR Catalog info, and the Jpegs I typically publish from those images. It all fits on one disk and makes a lovely archive.

For the D800 I am going to move to 32GB cards, and move to 50GB BluRay's. It's more expensive to do that, but it makes the most sense.

I prefer Sandisk Extreme Pro, or Extreme's for my use. They have never caused me any issues, and I like the company. Others like Lexar but I am not a fan.

Has anyone seen the file sizes for NEF images? I usually shoot compressed loss-less 14 bit NEF.

I can't see where in the D800 brochure it mentions the different file sizes, just the pixel dimensions.

I have read that a 14-bit uncompressed NEF from the D800 is around 75MB, but I don't know the files sizes of the compressed NEF and JPG options.

I downloaded some, but they're at home and I'm at the office. If no one responds by the time I get to the house, I'll let you know.

The actual file sizes in MB are going to be important to know before we try to decide what kind of cards that we are going to need.

I am using 12GB cards now (in slot 1) to shoot weddings with my D3 and I usually do not have to swap any cards for a normal wedding. But sometimes even this is not enough. I am just wondering if I need to go to 32GB or 64GB for the CF (slot 1) where I record loss-less compressed 14 bit NEF's (sometimes 12 bit for reception shots) In slot 2 I record a backup JPG and highest resolution and I use 8GB cards and never have to swap.

The jpg's on the Nikon web site that I downloaded range from 24MB to 31MB for some of the D800E images. So I am not sure what to expect from the NEF's. I do not care about tiff.

If the average JPG is 25MB, if I shot 800 images at a wedding, that is about 19GB just for my JPG in camera backup files. So I think that I would need to go to a 32GB SDHC card. Based on this math, I think that I am going to need at least a 64GB CF card to shoot an entire wedding's worth of NEF's on one card. Some weddings, I shoot 1000 shots. I may have to rethink shooting the reception at less than the 32MP resolution that the camera allows for. The size of these files may really necessitate some significant changes in the way I shoot and edit.

While I think that my workstation will be able to process the larger images without too many hiccups, I am worried about backups. After I download images from my card, I immediately copy them to a RAID-1 NAS. Then after I rate them in lightroom, I delete the worst ones and copy the rest to DVD-R for "long term" storage. I doubt that I would be writing the D800 NEF's to DVD-R. There would be too many of them. I have a blu-ray burner but I have not gone to the expense of using it yet to back things up. I may start using a hard drive for long term backups, I don't know at this time. A lot depends on how big these files really are.

Does anybody know the reason why Nikon decided to use two different types of memory cards in the same Camera ??

This is the exact card I've been using in my D700 for over a year and it has worked flawlessly and I will continue to use it in the D800 plus I intend getting a 32gb or 64gb card too

Great question! I've been wondering the same thing. Why, on earth, support SD cards in a camera like this? CF cards have much greater throughput than SD cards do, and given the amount of data this thing will be churning out, I would think at least CF cards, and maybe even the new format supported by the D4. Now that would be a nice combo, CF and that new format the D4 supports.

One answer to "why the SD cards" is that many laptops now, mine included, has an SD slot. They certainly do not have a CF card slot.

When on a trip, it will be nice to take out the SD card (I just ordered a 128GB SDXC card) and dump the files directly on to my laptop. Of course, if you are carrying a card reader it won't matter.

I cannot for the life of me understand why they used two different cards in the D800.
In the D4 it makes a lot more sense due to the transition to XQD.

I will probably be using a single Lexar 32GB 600x Compact flash for Overflow
and maybe for the 20MBs sustained Video write speed
the same as their 1000x card if it works better than SDHC.

I have a V1 and D7000 to share batteries and SanDisk SDHC cards with the D800.
So I will try the 30MBs, 45MBs, and 95MBs cards before buying more.

It's on the last page of the brochure on the left side where it gives memory card capacity.

So it is - not sure how I missed that...!

Anyway, the official figures from the brochure are as follows...

14-bit Uncompressed NEF - 74.4MB
14-bit Lossless Compressed NEF - 41.3MB
14-bit Compressed NEF - 35.9MB

12-bit Uncompressed NEF - 57MB
12-bit Lossless Compressed NEF - 32.4MB
12-bit Compressed NEF - 29.0MB

JPEG Fine Large - 16.3MB
JPEG Fine Medium - 10.4MB
JPEG Fine Small - 5.2MB

JPEG Normal Large - 9.1MB
JPEG Normal Medium - 5.3MB
JPEG Normal Small - 2.6MB

JPEG Basic Large - 4.0MB
JPEG Basic Medium - 2.7MB
JPEG Basic Small - 1.4MB

TIFF Large - 108.2MB
TIFF Medium - 61.5MB
TIFF Small - 28.0MB

Those are the figures for FX - the DX crop figures are around 2.1-2.3 times smaller, and pro-rata for the other crop options.

I understand that uncompressed NEF files are about 75MB. For comparison, 35mm film images scanned at 4000 ppi, after cropping off the black edges, are about 120MB.

Excellent discussion. But let's see if we can put a finer point on card selection...

In looking at the specs, I can see no compelling reason to go with more than a 400x (60MB/sec) rating (acknowledging the oft-discussed download speed advantage). The minimum on the brochure is Class 6 (60x... yes six-zero)for video. And considering that the price jump for a 32GB card at 400x to 600x (90MB/sec) carries an approximate 75% price premium, selecting the "right" card is not insignificant, especially if we are buying 3-4 cards. Is a potential (?!?!?) download advantage of 50% worth $75??? Multiplied by 3 or 4, not to me.

Thoughts??

Cheers!!

Thankfully, I already have plenty of SD cards to try.
SanDisk 30, 45, and 95MBs.
It is the initial Compact Flash card that I need to decide upon.
I heard that Nikon rates the write speed capability of the D800 as over 100MBs
and the D4 as over 200MBs.
Not sure why the difference but this is not the same as "up to".
Real world testing is needed to see if there is noticeable camera performance increase
with a card above 400x (60MBs write speed).
