D800 Cards -- Backup mode

The manual says you can use the 2nd memory card as overflow or backup. Assuming that the SD card will be a slower card than the Compact Flash card, will using the cards in backup mode slow down the write process and therefore ultimate shooting speed and buffer capacity? Or is it possible that it writes to the 2nd card after a delay so as not to clog up the data flow?

I tried to answer that question from various postings and don't have any to quote at the moment but everything I read implied the net speed is the slowest of the two, it's not some kind of write-thru.

However, the buffer is pretty large.
