I've got an L bracket for my D300s and D700 camera bodies for use without the MB-D10 and wondered if either would work on the D800? If not which one would you recommend? I'd like to get one for horizonal orientation only since I rarely shoot verticals.

Hi Mark,

I am not sure how well the D300/D700 L-Bracket will fint the D800.
Since you have it you could check for yourself.

As for Camera Plates you can get the Kirk PZ-146 at the Nikonians Photo Pro Shop for $55.00 or the RRS BD800 plate for $60.00.
Both companies make excellent products.

Best Regards,
Marty

I tried it. It will fit...but, it is like putting a size 38 butt in a size 36 jeans.

If I remember correctly, it smashes against the side and you can't open the ports/doors. I decided against using it. I went with the plate which came with the ball head and has been sitting around do nothing, up to now.

Mark,

I have RRS L-brackets on both my D700 and D800. I just looked at them and they are somewhat different. One place in particular is the back of the bottom piece where it snugs up to the camera body. They are shaped different in this area. Since the D800 L-bracket fits like a glove in that area, I don't think I would be comfortable tightening the D700 bracket onto the D800 body, or vice-versa. I guess it could physically be put on there, however it may put pressure in places that are not meant to have pressure, and it may hinder access in areas.

Bottom line, mine are different, and I would NOT want to switch them.

Regards,
Don

Looks like I'll get a dedicated D800 bracket. Just trying to save a few $$$ after spending my savings.

Larry Jordan provided some photos of how he modified the D300 L Bracket to fit the D800, https://www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=430&topic_id=14735&mesg_id=14735

One of my great frustrations with Nikon DSLRs is that every model seems to have a slight modification in form. Not only does the L bracket change, but the grip and the plate or bracket for the grip also change. At D800 prices, this means an additional $150-700 per camera.

Larry's modification does work if you have the tools, but a new bracket fits a little better.
