I had a Nikon wireless transmitter for my D7000 and I hoped it would work on my d800. It doesn't. I am pretty sure it was infrared so unless they removed wireless infrared from the D800 I would have assumed it would work.

Anyway the only close thing I found on the Nikon site was something that was in excess of $300.00. My transmitter for the D7000 cost me about $15.00.

I have wound up ordering a third party unit that involves plugging a reciever into the remote terminal and then using a transmitter which has a two step tigger for EL/FL and then for shooting.

Did they remove the infrared triggering capability from the D800?

Paul,

>Did they remove the infrared triggering capability from the D800?
I did not understand this statement.

I do not think any of the higher end DX bodies (D200, D300, etc) and the FX bodies (F5, Dx series, D700, D800) supported infrared shutter triggering. They all have 10-pin connector and as such need a wireless receiver to be connected to this terminal.

I purchased the Vello Wireless ShutterBoss Timer Remote (10-Pin) from another Nikonian and happy with this remote. I have to still explore all the features supported by this remote.

Just buy a wireless transmitter/receiver for $15 on eBay. They come from China and it takes a couple of weeks to get it. Best part, they work and the range exceeds several hundred feet.

Your infrared shutter release will not work with the D800. I purchased a SMDV RFN-4s to use on mine. I think I paid about 60 bucks for it online. Works well as a shutter release and works in all modes including MUP. It has multiple channels in case your are using it where others are using similar devices. This is only a wireless shutter release and does not allow you to make changes to aperture, shutter speeds or other settings.

Same issue I had with the D300s.

I tried the aftermarket stuff and it worked but was crappy build.

I just got the WR-R10 and WT-T10 but I still need the WR-A10 now. Good grief Nikon!!!

Shoot, shoot and shoot some more!

I know all companies are out to make money and having to buy all new accessories every time you update your camera can generate a lot of cash. But I would not be surprised if a lot of people put off upgrading simply because of the cost of buying all new equipment.

For example the grip on the 7000 will not fit if you want to upgrade to the 7100 yet both cameras are virtually the same size. So not only do you have to pay 1200 for a new camera but 300 or so more for a new grip.

If the same flash can work across the entire Nikon line I do not see why they could not come up with a remote that will work across the entire line or at least offer adapters or converters that you can get to connect different accessories to different cameras.

A lot of third parties make a lot of money offering these accessories and while I may want Nikon Cameras and Nikon lenses I do not see paying $400 when I can get a functional grip for less than $100. Even if they only last a year I can get 3 new ones before it costs as much as the Nikon.

A Camranger will allow you to view the live-picture scene, focus and trigger your Nikon D800 remotely, albeit at a PRICE!

It might not be appropriate for you but for the benefit of other members, more info can be got by searching for 'Camranger' on Youtube.

The camranger was mainly developed to transmit images and control cameras to and from the ipad of iphone. A great device that apple and Nikon neglected. The D600 and D800 have cards that can be inserted into the card slots to make this work, but there are transmission problems. THis camranger does the trick. Also, the camranger works on many Nikon models.

Camranger only works with Apple products.
IUSBportCamera (srating shipping)
works with any device including Android.
And I think there is a third device very similar to IUSBPortCamera that does the same thing.
They are all $299.

If you're looking for a nice wireless remote try the "RFN-4s Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Nikon DSLR with MC30 Type connection." It works really well for me, and it does not occupy the hot shoe on the D800. Amazon carries it.

What he said!!
My RFN is awesome.

I also have the Camranger, 100 PERCENT terrific products.
Does all it claims to do.
I use it on both my D800 and D7000 for remote adjustments when they are 20+ feet up in the air for exterior real estate shoots.
FANTASTIC addition to my aresenal of goodies.

I just picked up a Delta Remote from interfit for $38.00. Their Internet page doesn't list a D800, but I contacted them directly to make sure. Works perfectly. I also tried it on my D7000. Works just as we'll.

I just got the RFN. It looks like it will work fine except if I try yo use my GPS. I really wish Nikon would separate the GPS and the Remote connectors.
