I just bought the D800 and I am trying to get it set up.The memory card access lamp is blinking, when the camera is turned off and the battery is being drained down.Anybody know how to correct this? Thanks.

As far as I know, there is no menu or switch setting that would cause this type of behavior.
Does it happen with just the CF card or just the SD card?
If it is just the CF card, get a flashlight and look into the slot to check for any bent pins.
If it is isolated to the CF or SD, try a different card if you have another.

All that said, if you bought the camera from a local shop, I would return to the store. They'll have CF and SD cards and can check yours in their display model. It could very well be the camera itself so I would not delay because you would definitely be better off with an exchange than sending a new camera off to Nikon repair.

Do you have a grip attached?

Does it just occasionally blink or does it stay on? Every Nikon I have does that occasionally and causes no problem. The off switch does not turn the camera off, it puts the camera in to sleep mode. So there is activity and very low current is drawn when the camera is in sleep mode with the "off" switch. Note that the drain is much higher on D800 than other recent camera models so the battery needs recharging more often than a D7000 that uses the same battery.

The activity like flashes more often when the battery grip is attached.
If the activity light stays on it might indicate a memory card problem.

I first noticed a problem when the battery drained overnight.Recharged it.With no card in and the camera off,the E (Empty card slot)was blinking.Put CF card in and the access lamp blinks continuously.Put both CF and SD card in and continues to blink.Do not have a battery grip attached.Sounds like,I need to return it.

Hi Ted,

Are the memory cards on the Approved list listed in the D800 Users Manual.
If so, I would return the camera.

Best Regards,
Marty

Hi Ted, can I trouble you for an update on how your problem with the memory card access light turned out? My D800 began having a problem with the memory light blinking indicating memory access attempts when the camera is in 'off' mode about a month ago. Thanks in advance for any feedback. //Mike
