I recently purchased a Nikon DK-19 Rubber Eye Cup (recommended by another Nikonian in another forum) for my D800 and want all to know that it really helps me to see my subject better for focusing and composition... and helps with camera stability for better 'sharpness' when pressed comfortably against my eye.

It is only about $10 on-line and the instructions explain well how to swap it out for your standard eye piece.

I know this may not be the forum for 'gear' but I am putting this post here for folks that don't get to the other forums.

Thanks for sharing that Dan. A good tip like that is always appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I made a similar change going with the Hoodman eyecup. It wraps around the side of my eye and provides a darker viewfinder.

I did find that a small drop of blue Loctite was needed. I had my first eyepiece come loose - repeatedly - until it was lost. I used a single drop of blue Loctite - not the red.

Eric,

I tried the Hoodman and found it a bit too large for my likeing, but the wrap around was nice. The DK-19 is not too large but fits totally around my eye and then the camera rests nicely on my cheek and eyebrow with no gaps around the cup. The original retainer/screw ring popped out of the old eye piece and fit sungly into the rubber DK-19, then a retainer ring goes on over the end that screws into the VF and the VF shutter locks it in....no problems so far.

We like the Hoodman eyecups. My wife uses the larger one which allows her to wear glasses while using the camera. I have the smaller one on both of my bodies. They have the added advantage that they keep your eye at just the right distance and now I have much less trouble with smudging on the eyepiece lens.

Agreed, each of my FX cameras were fitted with the DK-19 - what a diff.

I tried a DK-17 magnifying eyepiece in the shop but couldn't get comfortable and didn't buy it. But the DK-19, yes absolutely! I had the equivalent on my F2AS back in the day too.

Dan, good point about eye cups. Very useful when using a polarizer to maximum effect with the sun smacking you in the side of the face. I have them on all my Nikons except the P7000. Haven't figured that one out yet.

When I sold my d700 my D-19 eyecup came with me. As I wear spectacles I find it an essential extra to prevent stray light and getting a better viewfinder view.

I looked for the equivalent for my D7000, but couldn't find anything either. I do sometimes use my Hoodman right angle viewer and that has a D-19 style eyepiece.

Richard,

I heard that the Nikon DK-3 eyecup with a DK-22 adapter works on the d7000.

Just FYI.....

Thanks Dan, I will definitely investigate! Would love an eyecup on my D7K.
