I just received my D800 and I have a few questions about
setting it up for the initial shoot. Fist off I'm shooting raw
and when I open an image in Capture NX2 the metadata shows it
was shot in raw 12 bit{Iwould like it to be in 14 bit but I
can't figure out how to make that happen} the file size is 72
megs the image size is 1632x1080 and when I get the image to
photoshop it is an 8 bit image with a size of
22.667"x15" x 72 dpi and the image quality is not as
good as my D2x.
I would like to get to open into photoshop as a 16 bit image.
I need your help getting this thing to do the wonderful things
it's capable of. Thanks
By the way this is my first time in the forum.

Photoman,

Welcome to Nikonians!

You are suffering from a problem with a simple solution. Most likely you were using Nikon Transfer vs 1.5.3 or earlier. It does not always transfer a D800's files correctly. The solution is to use the Transfer utility in Nikon View NX2 (vs.2.3.1) instead. Read here:

https://www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=226&topic_id=39383&mesg_id=39383&page=

Also, to set your camera to 14-bits go here:

Shooting Menu > NEF (RAW) recording > NEF (RAW) bit depth > 14-bit

14-bits is the default for the camera, so your problem may lie in the bad transfer.

Darrel
I just downloaded Cature NX2 2.3.0 and that solved the 14 bit problem and the size problem. Thanks for your help and the quick response to my delema.
