Just pulled the trigger on purchasing the D7100 from Adorama
I am upgrading from the D40
Lots of new features to learn

I am so excited to use the camera in Hawaii next month

Can't wait

I'd download the manual from Nikon, and give it a whirl. One think you'll notice right away is the more direct access to adjustments afforded in the design, with less necessity to go to the menu.

In all likelihood, the settings you preferred for the D40, you can use with the D7100. I for one, upped the sharpening to 5, with no worries, though I use STANDARD as the setting for color in the Picture Control section.

Enjoy!

Yup!

As a new D7100 owner, I can assure you you'll be happy when Brown finally shows up at your door.

Would be kind of funny if it was sent Fedex by accident... It would give you more trucks to chase down though. Best of luck with your new baby. As someone has suggested, download the owners Manuel and start studying, it is a major learning curve coming from a D40. And ask lots of questions here, the folks here are an incredible resource and are at the ready to offer help. Do not be afraid of asking a stupid question, the only true stupid question is the one not asked.
Also, have a safe and fun trip on your vacation.
