I'm thinking of buying a Nikon 70-300 AF G series lens for my D7100. I understand that this lens isn't the pinnacle of Nikon quality. That's not the subject of this post.

This particular lens does NOT have an aperture ring. So, my question is will this lens operate in manual mode on my D7100?

Manual mode does not require that the lens in use has an aperture ring as the aperture is selected on the camera just like when you use aperture priority mode.

For the G lenses, the aperture is controlled by the dial in front of the shutter release.

If you are interested in the next-step-up lens at the same price, I have the ED version of this lens for sale:

The lens that Joseph is selling is much better than the G version you mention in your opening post. I think the release of the G version AF 70-300mm was an experiment to see how the G lens without an aperture ring would be accepted. It was the first G lens made by Nikon. It was cheaply made. It lacked the ED elements of the more expensive D model and it was lacking in optical performance. I still own the original ED version. Even though my lens is now 13 years old it still produces very good images.

I agree with Len.

The AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED is optically much better than the AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6G.
It also has a significantly better build quality. The D version has a metal mount, the G version has a plastic mount.

Thanks for all your help. I purchased this lens (ED) locally for $100. LNIB. It does have more heft than the G series lens. I do like the metal mount vs. plastic.
