Hi Guys,

Just got my D7000 a few days ago and am going through the process of trying out each of my lenses. I also own a D300. I just connected my Sigma 105MM 2.8 Macro lens and the D7000 will not turn on. I've double checked the connectors on the D7000 and lens, but nothing seems to work.

Anyone had this same problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've been shooting with the 105MM 2.8 on my D300 with not a problem for about 2 years.

Regards,

Jim

If you do a search in the D7000 forum, I believe I saw something about Sigma lenses, at least some of them, not working with the D7000. Maybe Sigma will address this issue?

I
>just connected my Sigma 105MM 2.8 Macro lens and the D7000
>will not turn on.

The D7000 won't power up at all?

Try this: While attached to the camera (but with the camera power OFF), give the lens a slight twisty torque action (without touching the release button on the camera). Try turning on the camera and using.

I had a lens/camera connection issue with my Sigma/D80/D200... (I would get an ERR message). I wound up cleaning the contacts on my Sigmas and the problem never came back. Even so, the camera always powered on...

BUT, if your camera indeed won't turn on at all, this sounds like a serious defect somewhere.

Can you go to a shop and put the 105 on a different D7000 body?

By all means please let us know what Sigma says.

I did try this action and still nothing. But if I attach the lens then turn the camera to on (it does not come on) then slowly detach the lens, the camera comes on just after I start to twist the lens off. It seems like a contact issue to me, but I am not sure.

Don't know if I mentioned in my posting, but I have a Sigma 24-70MM and Sigma 10-20MM both connect and work fine so far. Only the 105MM is giving me problems.

It seems like a contact issue to me,
>but I am not sure.

You could then try some ethanol (grain) alcohol) on the contacts. You don't need much and you want to use a lint-free cloth/swab. Make sure you leave NO residue or lint. You COULD do this on the D7000 contacts.

I did this with my Sigmas and D200, problem solved.

I hope it's this simple for you.

Maybe if you and the OP compare serial numbers there might be a different version of the CPU that has been reported to be a problem on some 3rd party lenses. Sigma usually updates the CPU for free when new camera models come out.

I briefly owned a d5000 before returning it for the D90 and had a similar problem with the Sigma 105. Nothing would turn on with the lens on it. I contacted Sigma and they were aware of the issues (as were fellow Nikonians) and offered to make modifications on the lens. Sorry, but I don't recall what modifications they were.

I would not do anything to the lens until contacting Sigma as it seems to be an issue with specific lenses and specific cameras. I've had no issues with D90 or D300s. Will be receiving a D7000 soon and will try it and let you know.

Many thanks.

I took the lens over to a friends house, also a D7000 owner and it the Sigma 105mm would not work on his camera either.

I'll be calling Sigma to see about sending it in.

Drop a note here if yours works on your new D7000.

Yes. Stan was replying to a post from Sean (Obes), suggesting that you and he compare notes about the serial numbers on your lenses.

It may be that some (earlier?) examples of the 105mm need re-chipping to work with the D7000. It's happened before with other new camera models, and Sigma are usually good about updating the lens' processing chip once they know about a general problem.

Dennis,

I'm wondering of it has to do with serial numbers/date of manufacture. Is yours fairly new? Mine is over two years old.

D,
Thanks but not necessary, my lens arrived at CRIS Camera repair today for diagnostics and hopefully re-chipping.

I'll post a note here as soon as I get the lens back and try it out.

They told me it might be about a 3 week process.

Stay tuned.

I checked with the outfit that sold me both the lens and later the camera. They had 7 lenses on hand, some old, some new. They reported to me today that five of the seven would not work with the D7th.

I will wait to see what Sigma tells you.

Very interesting. No word yet from CRIS Camera, the Sigma repair facility. Don't expect any word for about a week, as they told me it would be a 2-3 week turn around.

I'll give them a call in a few days to see if they have anything to report.

Just called and talked with the folks at CRIS Camera repair. They told me my Signa 105MM was on the way back via UPS and would arrive on Monday the 20th. Not a bad turn around. The customer rep told me the lens had been diagnosed, brought to factory specs and new firmware installed so it should work with my D7000.

I'll post another report after receiving and trying it out on Monday.

I got my Sigma 105MM 2.8 back today from CRIS Camera Repair. The invoice with it said the lens had firmware upgraded for D7000 and D3100 compatibility. Also the lens had been cleaned and brought to factory specifications.

I connected the lens to my D7000 turned it on and it works fine, except for one issue.

On initial connect the lens showed an aperture of 2.8. As soon as I changed the aperture setting to a higher f stop and tried to go back to 2.8, it will not work respond. The lowest f stop I can set it to is F3.2. I've also tried this on my D300 body with the same results.

If anyone reading this post has any ideas on why this is happening, I'd appreciate the feedback.

I also tried my Sigma 24-70 2.8 on both bodies and it sets to f 2.8 with no problem at all.

Check to see if your lens is focused close - the effective aperture on a macro lens will change when the lens is focused very close and the new firmware on the lens may be reporting that. Try focusing on infinity and see what aperture is reported. If that gets you to 2.8 then consider this normal - nothing wrong with the lens or camera.

Yes. Lot's of folks don't realize the close-focus factor on lenses. Good pick-up. Hope this is the answer!

Well I'll be. Sure enough, as soon as I focus on infinity, F2.8 in the viewfinder, less than that and F3 in the viewfinder.

Many thanks, to all and have a Happy Holiday Season!!
