Hi everyone newb here!!
I had a little accident and erased The card via delete images after transfer and like an indiot erased the folder they were transferred to as well as emptied the trash on my MAC.
I cannot get the card to mount on my MAC. A friend said I had to switch the card to Mass Storage.. I cannot find out how to do that .. can I do that. If so, how or if anyone can tell me what options I have.. Thanks
Matthew

Welcome to Nikonians,

Do not reformat the card!

Do not use the card for new pictures!

How are you trying to read the card using the camera or a card reader?

The camera may require a special setting since some dSLRs can appear as camera device (PTP) for mass storage device. A card reader only sees the card as a disk drive or mass storage device.

Once you can read the card, you will need to obtain or use a program that recovers lost files as long as they have not been overwritten.

Hopefully you have not removed the card during a write operation and corrupted the card.

Hey Gerorge...
Thank you for the warm welcome and the advice.
I have not reformatted the card nor have I shot any other photos with the card.
I transferred originally with the camera attached. Then afterthe disaster I attempted via a card reader to see if my Mac recognizes the card and that was a NO go. So I sit here in limbo trying to figure out how to access the card and have it recognizable by the MAC.
I hear of PTP/Mass Storage..

Hi Matthew,

Welcome to Nikonians!
Sorry to hear about your problem.
As George stated DO NOT FORMAT the CARD or use it to capture new images!
There is recovery software available to recover images that have been deleated form a card. However if the images are overwritten they will be peminently lost.
Sandisk Extreme Series Memory cards come packaged with free Rescue Pro Software. Install Rescue Pro on your computer. Insert the memory card in a card reader attached to your computer. Open Rescue Pro software and use it to open the memory card and recover the lost images.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Marty

Hi Matthew,

Are you saying that the card reader will not accept the card?
What software?

You may have to reboot the computer.
If you erased the contents of the card, when placed in a card reader attached to your computer when you click on the appropriate drive you will see nothing.
I use PC's though the Mac should be similar.
I have used Rescue Pro to recover corrupted and missing image files from corrupted memory cards and it worked very well. Windows Explorer could not see the missing files but Rescue Pro found them and recovered them.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Marty

Thanks for responding..
My MAC won't mount this particular card. Any other card works fine. I am trying right now just to get the card to be seen. I can insert it in th reader fine.. But nothing appeears on my desktop/finder. I tried other cards and they mount fine. Someone told me about Mass Storage/PTP settings, but can't find them in the D3000.

Hi Matthew,

Will the card reader read SD type memory cards?
The more you fool with it the more likely the image files may be lost.
If so get the Rescue Pro software install it on your computer and try again.
If the card reader can not read SD cards, buy an external card reader that does and plug it in via a USB or Firewire port.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Marty

You can also try to recover the images on the Mac's hard drive with Rescue Pro, but you will be shown all the files that have been marked for delete, so you will need to have some idea of the original name of the images and hopefully they are unique.

The newer Nikon dSLRs do not have the options of PTP or mass storage.

Hey George.. Thanks.
That's disspointing about the Mass Storage. Would that have assisted me with the process? I have access to a d90, might that be able to do the Mass Storage thing?
Would the Mass Storage process help me in this process of recovery?
Thanks for your help.

BTW The reader I am using can accept SD cards and it normally would provide the catalyst to allow for my MAC to see and read the card. I guess when I formatted the card originally in camera it doesn't allow for the card to be read normally in my mac?
Im going to try rescue pro.... Thanks

Hi Matthew,

The Mass storage option on older DSLR's was required to configure them to be read on a computer. The newer DSLR's are automaticly configured to work when attached to a computer. Therefore the Mass Storage option will be of no benifit to you.
Formating the card in the camera has nothing to do with the problem.
You should always format the card in the camera.
I have had similar issues with cards, card readers, and other periferals when using PC's. Shutting down the system, waiting a few minutes and restarting has always corrected the problem.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Hey Marty..
I did formatthecard inthe camera and haven't done so since the meltdown.
I am going to try and use Rescue Pro and see what it comes up with.. Any idea as to why my comp isn't seeing the card?

What type of MAC do you have and which operating system are you using?
What size is the SD card?
Which reader are using?
Have you tried inserting the card into the camera and connecting the camera to the MAC?

I have both a G5 and MacBook Pro...Both running 10.5.8. The size of the SD card is 4gb. I don;t know the brand of reader but I have actaully tried 3. I have also used all three to see a memoory stick, so i know the readers work. I have tried using the card in the camera, but still nothing shows up. Thanks for replying.. Any ideas?

I haven't looked. By chance do you know how they come from the factory, as I haven't touched that and right now I am away from it.

Your SD card is 4GB so it is actually a SDHC card.

I have a bunch of the 9 (or more) in 1 USB card readers, and while they will read my 4GB and 8GB compact flash cards from my D300 they will not read any of the SD cards larger than 2GB, do you have another SD card that is 4GB or larger to see if they work in the card readers?

I ended up finding a card reader that specifically said it supported SDHC cards, and that seem to be working fine in my MacBook with my 8GB cards from my D3000.

Once you have found a card reader that works you may still have problems, mine can sometimes get upset if I don't insert the card just right, I have had most luck putting the card into the reader while it is not plugged into the computer, that way I can make sure it is correctly seated before letting the computer start reading the card.

Last week my friends got the card to be seen and using the Rescue Pro software, got the photos back. SOOOOO happy. But what you said makes total sense. I will research the Card Readers and find one that works. THANK YOU very much as I think this was my problem!!!! Fantastic Advice !!!
