I am finally thinking of upgrading my reliable N6006 to a Digital SLR. I have a couple of other Digital cameras, but want to see if I can use my AF lenses from the N6006.

My preference looking is the new D3100, but my spec for the N6006 say AF and the D3100 say AF-Bayonet ... are these really the same?

I have an AF Nikkor, a Promaster and a Sigma all zoom and a 400mm fixed from my N6006.

Can anyone verify that these will fit the D3100? the data from nikon is a little confusing.

Regards,

Don Weymouth

Hi Don,

Welcome to Nikonians!
Thank you for your support.
Your lenses AF drive are the screwdriver type driven by an AF motor built into the camera body. The D3100 does not have an AF motor built into the camera body and therefore will not provide AF when used with your lenses. For AF operation the D40/D40X/D60/D3000/D3100/D5000 bodies requires AF-S type lenses with an AF motor built into the lens.
If you want to use your current AF lenses you should get a D90 or the new D7000 which have AF motors built into the camera body. The D300S/D700/D3S/D3X also have AF motors built into the camera body.
Bottom line, on a D3100 your lenses will meter but will not AF.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

Marty,

Thanks for your help! I got my D7000 today and am not getting much work done in the office this afternoon. I can't wait to try some of my other lenses when I get home tonight.

Don

Hi Don,

Congratulations on your new D7000!
You are among the first to get one!
If you get a few minutes post your impression of the camera in the D7000 Users forum.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty
