You bet your sweet... it is. I shot 1,600 images at an event this weekend and only used 1/2 a battery.

How much power would that have previously taken?

Strange, I've seen no difference in battery life whatsoever since installing the new firmware?

Interesting! According to the Nikon site, there is no mention of longer battery life for the most recent firmware update. It states "Support for the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR has been added". Maybe the longer battery life is a hidden benefit ).

Wow, that is about as bad as my D200.

I have done the update and so far have seen no changes in the power consumption, but for long shoots I am using the D3's battery in the grip for the higher frame rate. However, there have been multiple reports of improved auto-focus abilities in some cases.

Sorry guys. What are you getting per battery? Maybe it's a model year thing.

Not sure why that one guy was getting 500 shots per battery but I get 1000+ of RAW and jpg. Maybe he has a GPS attached that draws power or he uses the onboard flash or something like that.

I said there was no need to upgrade and "if it's not broke, don't fix it" but I decided to not listen to myself and did the firmware upgrade anyway. The results were so uneventful I didn't even bother announcing it to the world...until now.
