I hope I can ask this question in this form? I shoot with a D-700 & D-300S. My biggest card is a 16mb and I want to go up to maybe 32mb card. I have Sandisk cards right now and they have done a great job for me. Should I stay with the same or is thier a better one I should use? I also shoot video some and want to make sure the cards are fast enough to do what I need. Can you help me on this? What should I be looking for to use?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi Harold,

I use Sandisk Extreme 32GB 60MB/sec. cards in my D700.
Both Sandisk and Lexar make excellent Memory Cards.
You can't go wrong with either brand.

Best Regards,
Marty

Thanks again Marty I was wondering? The 60mb per second is what I want then to do good for me? This would be fast enough for videos too?

Likely yes. When the D300s came out and started doing video the fastest CF cards were 333x and 500x (roughly 20-50MB/s).

I am a geek and not typical, but usually try to get the fastest card i can when buying. Reason being more for transfer speeds when importing photos on my PC, plus quicker writes from the buffer when shooting shots quickly. Not sure on video since i have the D300/D700 w/o video ability.

I have some 32GB Lexar 1000x cards that ROCK! Sooo fast. I've individually baselined each at over 90MB/s (rated in a perfect world for 100-120MB/s iirc).

like i said earlier though, the bottleneck is going to be the camera not the card. When the camera can only write 20MB/s and even if the card *can* go faster - it likely won't help. However then transferring pics to your computer will be faster!

Harold - I just recently bought a 2-pack of Lexar 1000X, 32 gb CFC cards for $230 for my D800 bodies and they are indeed superb. I have used Sandisk cards in the past, all without failures, but have now shifted mostly to Lexars. There's no really good reason, but I note that they give free copies of a very good recovery software with each card. FYI, usually the 2-packs have been cheaper than buying two individual cards. I usually buy the fastest cards I can find. Then they live on to my next cameras. I do not, however, buy "ginormous" ones, as that tends to put all of my eggs in one basket.

i recall reading somewhere that the maximum read write speed of the D700 is in the 45mbs range...so, anything faster, is not going to help speed to card from the camera.

As well, I tend to use smaller cards - 8GB and 16GB cards and change them often...running NEF and JPG fine as options.

I reformat after every shooting session in camera as I back up all my photo daily when shooting.....

I typically set everything down in to Nikon Transfer and then import to LR...yes, I know an extra step, but, I like seeing the files in NEF, and then my time machine backs it up immediately and I run another "pull" to the external drive.....to insure I don't lose anything.

I also only use Lexar Compact Flash Cards because if you ever experience loss of data on one of their cards, they will recover it for you for free if you can't recover it yourself using their recovery data software.
