Received Digital Darrel's book from Amazon yesterday. I've only had time to flick through it but it appears to be excellent. It's full of colour illustrations. It seems well written in an easy to understand style. It's also easy to find stuff. I have Thom Hogan's guide as well but looking at a CD can be a hassle.

Thank you for buying a copy Hedley. Jim and I worked hard to make sure it would be helpful to most D700 users. What do you think about the feel, book size, and fonts in the book. Easy to read?

Got my copy today, working my way through the text. I quick-browsed the last half, where it looks to me as if all the esoteric settings are illustrated and explained in...heaven forbid...understandable English.

Also used the code to upgrade myself here.

Now, where's the page with the next MegaMillions-Superball numbers? :>)

I also have Thom Hogans book which is good for getting into the technical end of the D700- Just my opinion.
The Darrell Young/ James Johnson is easier for me, I am an old film dog new to the digital world.
Also used the voucher code to upgrade my membership.

I am with you on the CD book issue. I have the Hogan D700 and and D2x books and just prefer a traditional book structure. I have ordered the DD's book and look forward to reveiving it.

I really like the clarity of the book! It has helped me "reset" my D700 to what I hope will be better pictures in the future. That said, I do wish the fonts had been a bit bigger. It can be hard for some of us old folk to read easily. I do enjoy the color illustrations, and the "easy to understand" style. Overall, a job well done!
Thanks, Darrell.

Thanks for this information. I look forward to getting my copy.

I placed my order on 23rd March and got an email from Amazon this week apologising for delays and saying that my delivery date is estimated to be July 14.

I'm wondering why this is happening.

Cheers,

Mark,

That is rather unusual. The book is showing in-stock on Amazon.com, and has been since May 20th. If I were you, I'd email Amazon and ask them why they haven't shipped your book. They are very responsive and will usually get back with you by the next day.

Mark,

I ordered mine using the free shipping option on May 31, after reading the kudo's in this thread. I just checked and it gave an estimate of June 4 for shipping. I would contact them.

Does anyone know if this is available at Borders also? I'm leaving for a trip to Utah (Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon) on Wednesday and would love to pick up a copy before I go. I just got the D700 after my D300 was stolen (took months for my insurance to get it right) and although they are similar I'd like to squeeze what image quality I can from the photos on this trip.

Both Borders and Barnes and Noble list it on line, so call around and check. The nice thing is that most of the menu items and features are the same, but there are differences. If you cannot get the book before you go, look at the pocket guide and when you see something new, such as the virtual horizon or the information display button, go to the manual.

I received mine about 2 weeks ago. I can't put it down. It's great. I have Thoms book also. Don't get me wrong it has all the info in it but I find it hard to go back and find things I need to review. I like being able to take it in the car to use while "she who must be obeyed" is shopping.

Thanks Darrel. Great Job!!

"What do you think about the feel, book size, and fonts in the book. Easy to read?"

Good news: Your book is the absolutely best how-to-use-your-Nikon book I've yet seen. Excellent writing, very good organization. It's clear, logical, understandable and above all, useful.

Bad news: The font is terrible for anyone over 50. Too "fine", too prissy, too tight, too whatever. It's hard to read.

Personal choice: I raced past all that looking back at D100-D200-D300 and F5s. They are history. Move on, please.

I have just glanced at mine, but so far I like what I see. I am glad I am not the only one sitting outside of JCrew on a bench with a book while the wife shops. It does somehow qualify as "together time."

It makes me very happy to hear that the book is helping you. Honestly, that's the reason I became a writer. I like helping people. If you bought the book at Amazon.com, and don't mind creating a good review, it will certainly help the sales of the book. I appreciate your help!

just got mine at the end of last week, took about two more week to be shipped but hey! the delivery was ahead of schedule so I am now working through the book

Darrell
GREAT and I mean GREAT book,
have been through a lot of books for my previous cameras (d70 and d80) that this one has been really helpful. haven´t gone thru all of it yet, but for what I have looked it is very informative.
There seems to miss some more information on certain topics (so far) for example the 3D 51 point system that really baffles me and I haven´t find more that just basic info on this on your book (maybe have to go through all of it)

GREAT BOOK

Got mine - it's by writers who enjoy shooting. Many "how to" books are by capable, yet jaded experts - who seem tired of it all. Not these authors!

The first page’s "active writing" hooked me. The authors understand my enthusiasm. It's a good read!

The style and size of the font are okay. Still, old eyes need help - if the letters were only 24-point . . .

1. I never buy e-books anymore. I did not read the ones I bought previously (including Hogan's D300 book) because I find them unreadable, thus not useful. Also, they are monsters to print.

2. For anyone over age 50, the font on Darrells' otherwise outstanding book is too tiny, too thin, too prissy.

Bob,

I'm sorry that you are having problems with the font. I am over 50 and have no trouble reading the book, even in dim light. I wear tri-focals.

The font in the D700 book is as large as pretty much any other book it's size. The D300 book font was a little thin, but not the D700 book, in my opinion, anyway.

Respectfully, I strongly disagree. Sure, I CAN read it and I did ... but it was more difficult than need be. Look at a lot of other books. Your book's font is TOO SMALL and is more difficult to read than most.

My working life was spent as an editor, reporter and as IBM's head of public relations and later head of IBM's internal communications (where I was responsible for the Annual Report and for many employee publications).

I am not a novice. Trust me, the font will cost you some sales. Hopefully, not many because it is an exceptionally good book.

Just finished the book -- and it really helped me out. I enjoyed it more than I did the ebook from Thom Hogan on the D700

The font was just a "tad" to small for me -- would maybe liked it just one size bigger -- but not that big of a deal for me (I'm 60)

Thanks for the book Darrel

Can anyone please elaborate on the Voucher Code which enables you to get a Gold Upgrade.

I bought mine from Amazon UK, but saw nothing about a voucher code.

Incidentally, the Darrell book is absolutely first class. It does not make the other two - the Nikon Manual, and the Hogan one - any less valuable, or superfluous. They all approach the subject from different angles, and none has a complete monopoly of the information you want with the clarity you want. I find that having all three more or less answers all the questions, whereas having only one or two only answers most of the questions. Expensive, but peanuts in the D700 and its lenses context.

The Voucher is on the page before the index at the back. I also got mine from Amazon UK and had been looking for this. Thought I would look to see if it was mentioned in the index and found it as I opened the back of the book.

I have one question about the voucher, where was the photo taken.

Picked up my copy at local Borders Book Store. Haven't read through it yet but the font looks fine...

Note: The book had two of those "security" patches: one stuck to the back cover and another one tucked away on an inner page in the middle of the book. When I removed it the tag pulled away some of the print...

I have the book and that's what I like about it. It's just the right size and level of content to help me really understand the features of the camera, and I was able to get through it in a couple of days. Now using it for a reference.

Hi;

I just too purchased his book as well as the Nikon Creative Lighting System book from Nikonians Press. I'm currently a Silver Menber. Can I use the codes to upgrade or extend my membership? If so, how do I do it?

Thanks, Brad
