The USA site does not have the firmware update listed yet.

Info from the page with the download

The following improvements have been made in version 1.01

- When Custom Setting a4 Focus tracking with lock-on was set to Off in Continuous-servo AF, the lens drive moved gradually without achieving focus. This issue has been resolved.
- When the Speedlight SB-800 was mounted on the camera with flash mode set to Distance-priority manual (GN) mode, and then the exposure meters were reactivated or the camera was turned on, the distance information displayed on the SB-800 changed. This issue has been resolved.
- When the Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10 was mounted on the camera and an EN-EL3e battery inserted in the camera but no batteries inserted in the MB-D10, and SB-900 flash mode set to TTL auto flash mode, the flash mode changed to A mode when the exposure meters turned off or were reactivated, or the camera was turned off or on. This issue has been resolved. (This issue has also been resolved with SB-900 firmware Ver. 5.02.)
- An issue that, in extremely rare cases, resulted in noticeable black dots in images captured with Long exp. NR in the shooting menu set to On has been resolved.
- Manamah, displayed in the Time zone options for the World time item in the setup menu, has been changed to Manama.

Why is an external card reader needed to update firmware for the D700 but not for the D200, d300, etc.?

I do'nt know why, but the instructions say to do it that way.
May be you can connect the camera to the comp. via USB and transfer the downloaded file to the camera that shows up as a disk.
I prefer not to connect the camera to the computer in any case, even when I transfer images.

I noticed that Vista Home Premium 64 bit is not listed.
Will the 32 bit version work on my 64 bit OS?

The file that you download is basically a self extracting Zip file. I have run other such 32 bit files on a vista 64 bit computer okay. I would suggest downloading it and seeing if it will extract the Bin file. If it does not work send me a PM.

It's because the D700 can't be configured to behave as a mass storage device, thus you can't simply attach the camera to your computer through USB, and copy the firmware file to the CF card.

It is the serial number of your camera. It is located on the bottom plate of your camera. Your camera will have to be a U.S. import, the serial number begins with 3 (U.S.A. import model), to be registered with Nikon U.S.A.

It's easier to download from the Nikoneourope website since you don't have to sign in and enter your serial number.

Inaccurate. My D700 has a serial # starting with 2, is tagged with Nikon USA sticker and purchased from a legit US dealer...and is successfully registered with Nikon USA.

I downloaded from the USA site and didn't have to enter my serial number. Turns out my computer has a CF slot in front. I never knew that. I always downloaded from the camera.

It's not an optical illusion. It just looks like one.

All done, thanks. How does the usual consumer know when a firmware is available? If I did not check this site I would never have known about it (as well as the update on SB-900).
Since I registered my products shouldn't nikon be the one e-mailing me about this updates?

"I downloaded from the USA site and didn't have to enter my serial number."

Hmmm! Next to the download button on the US site it states..

"- Requires Serial Number - File Size ~ 1.63 MB"

... so I just assumed it did. I had problems logging in so I never got that far. I just downloaded from the EU site.

From the Service and Support page, select "Visit Product Support" select "Digital SLR Cameras", fill in:

Search by Product: "Digital SLR", "D700"
Search by Category: "Firmware Update"
click the "Search" button.

Now click on the link for your computer's OS, Windows or Macintosh.

This is for Nikon U.S.A site.

Maybe Nikon learned the hard way that having the camera appear only as a camera is less confusing to the end user than allowing them to optionally change the appearance to a disk drive. And for the few times a firmware update is needed it is easy enough to get a card reader. And most advance users are already using card readers.

I updated mine yesterday. It said something like "SN needed" but in the end, I logged in as usual and downloaded the software into a card and then to the camera. No hiccups.

To all D700 first-time users of digital gear, it's easy.

Hi all.

Thought I would share my experience with the new firmware update for the D700. No problems whatsoever. Although the site states that the serial number is required, I did not have to enter mine. However, when I entered the site it recognized me immediately and I did not have to log in. The second point I would like to make is that Nikon has streamlinned the firmware update process by updating both the a and b parts at one time. You used to have to do 'a' first then format the card again and do 'b'. The camera also showed that the firmware update was in progress (with a progress bar) for the entire time it took. The screen used to just go black till it was done. Kudos to Nikon.
