1) I've never heard my D700 beep regardless of af lens or af2 or beep volume custom etc settings? Any suggestions (My D70s beep isn't shy)

2) The AF illuminator has never illuminated regardless of lens (manual discusses excluded lenses-mine aren't) or custom 'a' Autofocus' settings. Any suggestions? (My D70s headlight isn't shy)

3) Where's the beep hole out of which I can't hear the beep?

Please don't tell me to send it back...I want to keep it.

An excellent question. The D700 out-of-the-box defaults are to beep and activate the AF assist light. My D700 didn't do either, and I've just now turned them "off" Did we miss something, or are D700's not actually functioning correctly?

I'm not sure if you have checked the following, so here goes...

Regarding the AF-Assist Illuminator, there are some conditions where it does not operate. To quote from the D700 manual (p. 290):

The AF-assist illuminator lights when lighting is poor. AF assist
illumination is only available when both of the following conditions are met:
1. Single-servo autofocus is selected for focus mode (pg. 72).
2. Auto-area AF is chosen for AF-area mode (pg. 74), or
single-point or dynamic-area AF is chosen and the center
focus point is selected.

Regarding the in-focus beep, there are also some conditions where it will not sound. From the manual (p. 298):

Choose High or Low to sound a beep when the self-timer is used
or the camera focuses in single-servo autofocus (note that a beep
will not sound if Release is selected for Custom Setting a2 (AF-S priority selection, pg. 284).

My D700 AF Illuminator and in-focus beep both functioned right out of the box. Obviously, the AF Illuminator only functions when there is insufficient light for the camera to focus normally.

I've also reset camera and shooting settings to default reset and
tried self timer. No beep.

Taken the camera into the dark closet and still no af illum. I am amazed, however, how little light is needed for it to focus correctly
and at one time wondered if they used an IR beam instead of white
light. Covering the 'headlight' doesn't affect dark focus.

It just might be that both items are on the same flex circuit and/or not plugged in, which is why I ask, where's the beep hole? Near the headlight?

The mystery is solved. I use continuous focus mode almost exclusively, and I use dynamic area focus... so there we have it.

I didn't really fret though, as I don't want beeps and lights going off anyway. Good to see it was not an error however.

I too found that AF-S is required for the headlight to blink on.

So, I'm certain a little more playing will get the beep to sound as well. But fact is the little musical note in the lcd is there but the audible note doesn't sound regarless of H or L setting or ??.

My first Nikon digital, the D70s is still rather new to me after a month, but I did get used to it's incessant focus beep (never got used to it's balking shutter without being focused). The D700 is strangely silent although I appreciate it's willing shutter release under any circumstances.

What a difference in images tho. Family members are placing dibs on the D70s but think I'll keep it for eBay/web images...it's quick and dirty...well quick.

Digital quality is approaching film. Not there yet but mighty close and convenient, but the D700 with the 14-24 is like carrying the 4x5 weightwise. Have to get a MB-D10 with a load of batteries and will be able to skip the gym.

Good thing there is no D700 operators test to pass before taking it out.
