In the exciting third quarter of a high school football game (9/21/12) my two-year old D700 totally shut down. One minute it was capturing action on the field (as well as the stands), the next minute there was total darkness. By the next morning the camera was packaged up, postage affixed and mailed to the warranty provider, Mack Camera in NJ. Having dealt with them before, I knew they would take all the necessary steps to diagnose, repair and get my trusty sidekick back to me with due diligence. I'm sure they tried hard but they ended up sending the D700 to Nikon with no further news as to the problem. Nor was there an estimate on the completion date. To make a long story short, the camera - in all its repaired glory - arrived today (10/22/12) I do count myself fortunate to have it back in a total of four weeks time. What I do not understand very well is the work that was completed. "Replaced rubber grip. Replaced rewind side rubber. Replaced CF cardholder rubber. REPLACED POWER PCB. Cleaned CCD. General check and clean." I get it all except the 'power PCB' thing. Any colleagues have some input for me on what that is/means & any consequences I might be facing because of its replacement? Just a little sidebar to this drama. I had a wedding to shoot on 10/13/12. Knowing the D700 would not be back I ended up buying another one as my main camera for the wedding with my D300 as the backup. It looks like the D300 will soon be on the selling block and I am punch-drunk happy to have two D700s.

I guess that the printed circuit board was the actual cause of your total darkness eh.
Some time ago I had a new 55-200VR DX Nikon lens, It came with a D50 kit but I never used that lens, it sat in its box for a year (possibly it took 10 shots in total from new)
Anyway I went to a local dealer in the UK and asked for part exchange and he informed me, quite rightly as it turned out that the lens was not foccussing correctly.
I sent it to Nikon in its original box approximately one week over its one year warrenty, several long weeks later I received an estimate which was not only far more than the lens could be purchased for new at a genuine dealer, the list of parts they said required replacement covered virtually everthing inside the thing.
They didnt want to now about the item being virtually new, no compassion at all.
Cut my losses and sold it on the auction site having written an honest account of why it was being sold.

Thanks for the info on PCB. I had a feeling it was more involved than a rubber grip. At least you were able to get even a meager return on the lens and maybe inner satisfaction that somewhere, someplace a part of that 55-200 is helping someone else enjoy their newly repaired lens. It all comes around full circle.
