Were do I find the 50% off coupon for this book so I can enter it into the appropiate spot on Amazon.com's purchase page? I've looked under "My User Menu" > "Vouchers and Coupons".

Also wish to purchase the CLS book.

I read it the other way, that is by purchasing the book you get a 50% discount on a Gold Membership to Nikonians. Of course I could be mistaken.

You can use the coupon to extend your current membership another year if you wish.

There is no expiration date on the coupon with the D300 or CLS books, so probably the coupon in the D700 book will not have one either. I haven't seen any mention of expiration in Nikonian forums either. So there shouldn't be any problem in delaying you use of the coupon.

I have both the D300 and CLS books. Based on those I'll strongly recommend the D700 book.

I would get Darrell's book. He knows how to address Nikonians of all levels, like he did on the D300 book, after writing dozens of articles for the Nikonians Resources and going through our intense editing. Furthermore, with the help of Jim - a technical writer with over 25 years experience- the explanations get expanded. So you have two experienced writers and one tough editing team working for you. Rocky Nook has received sterling reviews for the depth of content, breadth of coverage, and warmth of delivery of the D300 book. And the D700 one is even better.

Although the comments were very positive about the content of the D300 book, there were many comments about the readability - small, thin type. I can deal with that, I think, but wondering if the publisher has addressed this common concern? Those comments may have caused many to pass up an otherwise great book.

Hey Everyone,
If you haven't heard of NPS you got to check this out. It is only for pro photographers, but they will let you test out Nikon gear for a couple weeks and it won't cost you a dime. I tested the D700 before I decided to buy it. It is an amazing camera. There is a full write up about NPS on www.damontuccisblog.com or you can go right to www.nikonpro.com to find out how to become a member.

Ron,

In examining my author's first-run copy, let me assure you that the font is significantly larger, with dark black ink, and a serif font. Rocky Nook listened to the concerns over font color and size, and, in my opinion, have solved the problem. I am 50-years-old, and wear trifocals. I have no problem reading the book, even under lower light levels.

G-Man,

On May 20th the book started selling on Amazon.com. Pre-orders are flowing to the buyer, as reported by some here.

For the next few days, the supply will be sparse on Amazon.com, since they are only getting a certain allocation as the book flows to worldwide outlets.

This works the same as when Nikon releases a new camera. A mad rush at the beginning with supply shortages, and then easy availability. Within a week or so, the supply and demand ought to equalize, and the book will be easily available.

Thanks to everyone that pre-ordered, and to those ordering now!

Thanks! I have some good reading for the long holiday weekend!

PS, I think I found the first typo? In the forward it mentions a 16 Megapixel Compact Flash card

Hmmm...

Haven't you heard of those new "megapixel" compact flash cards? The most important thing to not remember is that a 16 megapixel compact flash card is not double the resolution of an 8 megapixel compact flash card.

In fact, just forget what I wrote above all together. Good typo catch! I'll never live it down ... my editor, Tom Bone, is frowning, even now!

I recently got my copy of Mastering the Nikon D700 and after also owning Thom Hogan's guide, I would highly recommend the Nikonians Press book.

Very informative, easy to read and illustrative photos are a plus.
Great job gentlemen.

Be good

Thanks for the info, scorpio1. I ordered mine 3 days ago from amazon.ca and it's expected to arrive today. I'm so excited, can't wait to read it! D700 is so different from my previous D70.

Thom Hogan books are not for amatures to read because Thom goes into thin and deep waters sometimes with his analysis. It is useful information if you want to know every bit about your camera. I'm not familiar about the other books

No, many books stores also stock the books, such as Barnes & Noble. You might want to give them a call and ask, if you have a local bookstore. They can easily get one if needed. However, the cost is usually lower online.

Both books arrived yesterday, man what a great set!!

Okay, so the first of many questions Im sure is.. Page 9 Noise control, speaks about ISO 100.

Can you really tell the difference in noise/other quality using iso 100 vs 200 ?

I shoot images for traditional stock sales and am very concerned about noise. 100 ISO (LO 1) has virtually no noise as long as the image is exposed correctly. The D700 is very very good in the noise department, so for most uses you won't be able to tell the difference between 100 and 200 ISO. Only if you underexpose an image and then brighten it, will you begin to see a little noise difference.

In my opinion the D700 and D3 have some of the best looking low-light images I've ever seen. Those big pixels make a huge difference. I like to shoot at 100 ISO, but I am using a tripod most of the time. In reality the D700 will give you great images at ISOs higher than most other cameras. You'll just have to figure out what your tolerance for noise happens to be. I am a "no noise" fanatic.

Shoot images at both ISOs and compare them. Especially pay close attention to dark areas in the image. Can YOU see more noise at 200 ISO than at 100 ISO?

I really was interested in this book so I ordered it plus the expensive delivery. Anyway, after waiting a few days and about $60 later I received the D300 book!!!
Just discovered about 10 minutes ago as I sat down intending on devouring this one
I'm so disappointed that if anyone wants this book I'll send it for free plus shipping

That is certainly a disappointment. Sounds like someone made a shipping mistake. Surely they will accept a return?

You may note, though, that about 90% of the D300 material applies directly to the D700. They are very similar cameras. If you are not going to return the book, why not give it a read-through, I think it will help you understand the D700 quite well.

Yes, certainly was disappointed but a few minutes later I decided to look through the D300 book and found out, as you point out, that the D300 and my 700 are very similar and a lot of the material is applicable.
So....I may become an Indian giver and keep this book now.

By the way, I have about 2 ft high of photography books because I tend to "dive in" to any subject and I have to say that your book (albeit the other camera) is the easiest one I've read so far and the most practical.

In future I will certainly look to read more of your books.

I bought the camera after years of waiting for a full frame Nikon digital. I bought the book last week and really like it. It is very conversational and has solid information that helps me, a film guy, understand this remarkable camera and its functions. I like the fact I could pick it up and use it. But it has a tremendous set of capabilities that this book will help me use. To the authors, thanks. Solid writing and great job!

Hello Friends!

I got both books and also got the 50% reductions on Gold memberships for 2 consecutive years using the vouchers included. I was a lifelong Canon user who just traded all my 5D gear to become a Nikonian (D700 + MB-D10 + 24-70/f2.8 + SB-900. What i like so far is the great liberty of customization of the D700. I am still learning but i an convinced that these books will help me becoming a more complete photographer

Looking forward getting to know y'all and mastering my D700

Cheers, Babu :-)

Just picked up my copies of;
Mastering the Nikon D700
The Nikon Creative Lighting System
Photoshop CS4.

This should keep me busy for a while. Just picked up my D700 last week so I am looking forward to having something to do all winter long. Books look great, informative, etc...

Font could be a little larger for these old eyes.

I used my coupon for the 50% off on my Gold membership. Any additional discount for buying all three???

It is time to renew my membership and I want to upgrade to gold. I purchased the
"Mastering the Nikon D700", and understand I am eligible for a $37.50 savings off the gold membership price. However, when I pull up the upgrade page, I find only the "voucher" line to get a rebate. I see nothing on the back of the book that tells me what to enter to get the credit. Please tell me what I have to enter to get the credit.
Thanks
Ron

Update: I found the voucher number thanks to a post telling me where it is in the book. Upgrade complete! Thanks

OK Ramon,
Let me make sure I have this straight - I have two Rockynook books (neither of which have had their 50% number used), can I buy two years gold membership extension (each with 50% off) right now? Or do I need to wait until my membership is near expiration ('cause if I have to wait, I will surely forget about these discounts!)?

Thanks,

Is Amazon the only place to order this book? The reason why I ask is this is the 2nd time I've tried to buy this book and Amazon says 1-3 month shipping time. The last time I waited 3 weeks and just cancelled it...and I placed an order again last week and to my surprise it says, "Shipping Estimate: July 15, 2010 - September 13, 2010"

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1933952237/ref=oss_product

Sorta frustrating...

I was wondering about this myself. I notice that they have 14 new copies available from Amazon.com seller accounts, though. I'll see if I can find out why this is happening, and post about it.

Hmmm...I'll give Amazon another week.

Let me know if Barnes and Noble came through for you and actually had it in stock. The price with free shipping is ok, although I'm quite sure I'll be paying tax as well, and although Amazon was cheaper at least they say they have it in stock.

http://productsearch.barnesandnoble.com/search/results.aspx?WRD=mastering+the+d700

Wish I would have just waited it out back in February before cancelling, I probably would have gotten it this month. Amazon is usually really good about having stuff in stock. REALLY WEIRD!

I just spoke with the publisher, and new Mastering the Nikon D700 books have been printed. They are on the way into the distribution channel now.

The demand for these books is outstanding. Nikonians world-wide are buying them in great quantities. When they are in stock, jump on them quickly. Thanks for your patience.

Darryl:

When you say NEW books have been printed, does this mean an updated version/edition? If so then I'll just let my Amazon order stand as is until the NEW shipment of books comes in, Vs. ordering some new old stock of books from Barnes and Noble.

I haven't seen this book in stock and available to ship from Amazon for quite some time now...so I'll assume they are moving off the shelves then, which is a good news for you guys. Thanks for following up on this... Hopefully going forward the publisher can keep up with demand.

I believe that the second edition book is a direct reprint (no changes). Here is a reply from the distributor (the books are printed overseas for USA distribution):

The ship is due into port tomorrow. I would say the books will be to the warehouse around July 2. Of course that is assuming there are no customs delays. Once the book reaches the warehouse, it takes about 3-5 days for the stock to be put into inventory and to start shipping backorders.

So it'll be a couple of weeks before back orders go out. I wish I could give better news. They said that the books are selling so well that they sold out before they expected it.

If you have a local source for the book, and would rather not wait, you might want to pick it up soon. I noticed that Amazon UK has several in stock for immediate shipment.

Thanks for your patience!

I just got a call from our publishing house to inform me that Mastering the Nikon D700 has been reprinted and shipped to the distributor. The delivery date for the books (all 8786 pounds of them) is July 14th. You should see supply in the stores and online soon thereafter.

The demand for the book exceeded the supply for a period of a few weeks. Everyone that has a backorder in place will receive their book shortly.

To the hundreds of Nikonians that have ordered Mastering the Nikon D700—and are awaiting their backorders—I truly appreciate your patience. I've been assured by the publisher that this should not occur again.

I purchased the book today. I "mastered my D300 and joined Nikonians with the 50% voucher. In the short time I've been a member I've learned so much by reviewing the post(s) and the replies. I recently purchased the D700 with a couple of lenses and a SB900 Speedlight, so I will wait until I receive the Book from Amazon before I do any serious shooting.

Warmest Regards,

Noah

I just received that an email that Amazon UK thinks I get my book by August 4th. There seems to be a 3 month difference somewhere. I'll just have to be patient I guess. We must be a bit slow in Europe. But if I Enjoy the book as much as the D700 it will be worth the wait.

The book arrived "before" the D700, enough so that I was able to do a first read. With the D700 in hand, it was easy to set up Shooting and Custom settings banks by referring back to the book. I enjoyed most the humanity behind the well illustrated technical information...a chat that suggest expanded potentials for practical use. I feel like I'm already using a lot of the the power of the camera within the first week, for instance I wouldn't have thought to make a Custom setting for Focus tracking.

I just received my copy of Mastering the Nikon D700.
A question about the voucher, because I just enrolled as a silver member I'd like to how much I should pay to upgrade to a goldmembership.

Ruud,
50% will be covered by the voucher, 50% you need to pay yourself.
That's 37.50 for a one year Gold membership or upgrade. The nifty thing is that in your case you will then have a Gold membership valid for one year plus the unexpired term of your current Silver. Not a bad deal.

Have a great time :-)

I got the book last week and I have already read it cover to cover. I bookmarked sections that I know I will refer back to as the need arises.

This is without a doubt the most well-written and easiest to comprehend "tech" book I have ever read. (and I have a closet full of them...)

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about mastering the D700 (or at least have a deep understanding of all its' amazing capabilities)

I haven't read Thom Hogan's book, but I have read this one.....over and over again. In my opinion it is the best user-manual-type I have ever read. Make it the first accessory you get for your D-700.

While I've had my D700 for more than a year I was so impressed with Darrel Young's book on the D90 that I bought the one for the D700. I knew I was missing out on a few features and Young's book clearly shows that!

This book is an excellent investment.

Am I the only one that feels like the oem manual was more then enough information? Also, pay for a forum membership? No one else finds this to be a bit superficial?

On a side note: I shot both canon and sony systems professionally before Nikon and loved them, inevitably after shooting with a 14-24, I am now hooked with Nikon and don't see myself changing systems again. Point is, I was and still am with many forums from those brands, and none of them charged anything. I feel like the information and community is definitely valuable, but since when do people charge/pay for this? Especially when their are advertisements everywhere. Please don't take offense to this, as it is just my opinion and this overall concept of "paying" for a forum membership is a bit new to me.

This is a great book on Nikon D700, it's very informative and easy to understand. I got 4 versions of it - printed copy, Amazon Kindle (mobi), Apple iBooks (epub), and Adobe Acrobat (pdf), so I can bring it with me everywhere.

For anyone who is interested in getting a DRM-free eBook version, just go to O'Reilly website (http://oreilly.com), create/confirm your account, registered your printed book and after that, you will be qualified for their $4.99 eBook upgrade offer. After paying, you will be redirected to where you can select & download any of the eBook formats.

I bought the Kindle addition - for $10. I was concerned that Kindle could not do justice to a photography book. I was wrong. The Kindle addition is just fine. The figures showing camera functionality were more than sufficiently rendered on the Kindle. True, I did not get to fully appreciate the author's wonderful seagull picture - but that's that's what you loose on the Kindle resolution. In terms of the educational content, I don't think much if any was lost. So, if you have a Kindle - do buy the Kindle addition of this book.

On the book, my comments are similar to many others. I've owned my D700 for about a year, but I wasn't using its full potential. This wonderful book gave me a whole new camera to explore! Thanks!

This is a message to one and all throughout the world.

I purchased 3 photography books from Amazon.com in January 2011 and paid USD$71.47 by credit card but the books never arrived after more than a month. I wrote to Aazon.com about it and they promised to re-send the three books again and to wait till April 2011.
Can you imagine my surprise when Amazon.com billed me again for the same three books that never arrived without authorisation from me ?

I reported the incident to Visa when I saw the bill and they promptly acted on it and told me not to make the payment which was not authorised by me the second time. Amazon.com took the liberty to bill me again because they originally had my Visa card details when I placed the first order.

My advise to one and all is to be careful not to give out your credit card details for purchases overseas and to find an alternative mode in making payments.

CLS - Creative Lighting System, Nikon's on camera flash iTTL system.

Some of Nikon Speedlights also have the AWS, Advance Wireless System, that allows wireless remote control of Speedlights without wires. Of the current production line of CLS Speedlights only the SB-400 does not have AWS system.

has anyone tried this method of auto focus/...watched some vids, using continous servo mode with the button to release only and the af-on button only...you can use single servo and continous at the same time by simply controlling af with the af-botton...going from single to continous by just releasing the af-on button or holding it down for tracking...sounds cool.

Yes. I shoot concerts for a print magazine, and this method is preferred because you can lock the focus at any time, and then instantly take the photo when you're ready without waiting for possible focus hunting. You need to be able to take the photo in a split second in concert photography.

There is a good ebook from http://digital-photography-school.com called "Tack Sharp, A Step by Step Guide to Nailing Focus" by James Brandon. You'd be surprised as to how much technique there is to getting the focus just right. For example, focus-and-recompose often won't work the way you think if you're not careful. This book also explains rear-button focus.
