Incredible definition Gerard, but a lot of negative space! There's a 500 f4 VR with your name on it!

Indeed Jim and if there were still debtor prisons there would be a cell with my number on it. Just kidding!

I've been hung-up on the concept that I need to prove to people like yourself that "wow that guy really knows how to use that 300mm f2.8". Your right of course, I need to just pony up to the bar and buy a 500mm because this D800 requires the reach which the 300mm can't provide on a FX camera. D400 I'm dreaming!

Gerard,
Nice image! I actually like the negative space in this shot. I'm convinced that not all of our photos have to be tight portraits. Out of curiosity, what was the background?
Thanks for sharing,

Thanks Tim,

I shot this image with beach dunes and the dried out winter grasses of Lake Erie as the background.
Rondeau Park is about 45min to an hr. from Point Pelee National Park which is one of the worlds greatest convergence points for Warblers.

Gerard,
Your background worked out well! Even though I spent three Mays in Ontario conducting waterfowl surveys, I never had the pleasure of visiting Point Pelee, Rondeau or Long Point. So sad to know their potential and yet only see them from a low flying aircraft. Maybe one year I will be able to find the time to come up during migration.

Thanks Rick,

I get distracted by my work were I look at hundreds of student images and evaluate them. So during the winters I kind of want to look in my navel more than at more images. Spring and summer provide a relief from that strain so it's good to have discussions about our shared passion in the camera.

Gerard, I too like the composition -- the simplicity, the negative space, and the background colour. On top of that, when I zoom in, even on my iPad, it's easy to get an impression of the amount of detail the D800 must be able to capture. Thanks for sharing.
Take care,
CK

Thanks Larry,

In fairness to Jim (Pearce) I know that he had his tongue firmly in his cheek as when we're together I always wax on about the crop factor of a DX and how I miss it when using the D800.

Thanks so much Dave. (Love the shot with you and your rig in the canoe)

Sometimes I'm spending too much time with the camera but not shooting what I want to shoot within my capacity as an instructor, teaching artists to use a camera; which can lead to some pent up frustrations. I am always grateful when spring roles along and I'm freed to actually work the camera with what I enjoy the most and of that I never get enough time.
