Not quite sure where I should post this. I just made a major mistake and formatted the wrong card that had 300 important images on it. I hear there's card recovery software out there? Any links you can share of something affordable, if not free?

Thanks guys

I use MediaRecover. It should get all your photos back if you haven’t written any new data to the disk. It can be a slow process so when you start the recovery just go do soothing else until its done.

I see they have a free trial but I don’t know the limitations of the trial version. It is $29 to purchase.

Get it here...

I just bought a Sandisk Extreme III 2 GB card and it came with a mini-CD containing their RescuePro software. This is free to use, just needs registration. It claims to deal with all card formats :"RescuePRO works in any USB, FireWire or FlashPath Adpator and can recover data from Palm Pilots, Windows CE devices, Digital Cameras and Camcorders, MP3 players, Digital Recorders and other devices. Wheter files were deleted, the media was corrupted or formatted RescuePRO can help. The wizard driven interface makes it easy to recover your files with just three mouse clicks."

The help file also contains the following warning: "Most Digital Media (CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Sticks, etc.) readers come with a utility called "SMprep.exe" that can reformat damaged media cards. These utilities are accessible from Windows Explorer, My Computer or from The Start Menu. Once these utilites are run the files that existed on the media are no longer retrievable. You should only run these utilities when needed. Consult your media's owner guide or the guide provided with your reader or digital device for more information."

After reading your post I thought I would try the program out so reformated in-camera that same SD card, on which I had taken only about 24 photos, having deleted some of these prior to the reformat. I shoot RAW+JPG.

When I ran the program the first time, it took about 15 min to scan the card, then for some reason decided to rescan it and hung. It reports the file name of anything it finds and had indicated locating about the correct number of shots. When I started the program again it asked me what to do with the temp files it had written to the hard drive, and named the folder where they could be found. These turned out to be the photos which had been on the reformatted card. One shot was only partly recovered in both JPG and RAW versions (this had NOT been deleted prior to the reformat, so should have been restorable), but the rest seemed fine. I re-ran the software, cancelling a short while after it found what I thought was the last file on the card. This time it worked fine, but the shot previously only partly recovered was still corrupt.

There are companies which will recover lost data for you, but I would expect these to be expensive and so RescuePro will stay on my PC; I just hope never to have to rely on it. Since it doesn't write anything to the card it seems a good first line of defence.

I've read about Photo Rescue which gets rave reviews. I've not tried it out yet, though I bought it "just in case" . Take a look here:

SanDisk Rescue Pro recovers erased images, images from hard or quick formatted cards and even many corrupted images that PhotoShop and Windows claim are unreadable.

Takes a long time on large cards but well worth it.

Both SanDisk and Lexar have recovery software. If your card did not come with a free copy, you can download "try before you buy" versions of the software.

If you OK with the command line, I can recommend PhotoRec:
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

It's free and great at sniffing any recognizable data from media cards.

The key is not to write anything after you accidentally delete a photo or format a card.

The delete/format action only destroys the reference to the file/files.
Writing new data WILL destroy data.

Good luck!
