The bug being eaten was invisible to my naked eye and I didn't know there were two insects there until I saw them on the computer. The photo was shot hand held. I haven't done it yet but the image is so sharp it can be cropped tight with no loss of quality.

Last one was probably on a tripod and first two likely hand held. I don't remember for sure but am going by the settings I was using.
Check out these lowlight images with the 105. These are straight out of the camera. I still had the white balance set to Natural light auto from shooting outside earlier. You can see the only lights on in the room reflecting in Missy's eyes

Yeah I think so too. When I shot those I was still on natural light auto from shooting outside that day. And that sweet light is what happened. When I corrected the WB to incandescent it looked just plain boring so I put it back to natural light auto.

Just as an fyi it wouldn't be a problem shooting the bugs handheld regardless. Just might have to make a few more exposures to get it right handheld.
I bought this gadget since I shot those and and went to a ballhead with a larger ball because of having some drift with longer macro lenses on the tripod. I've got focus rails and three way heads but this little tool is the best buy I have made for making fine adjustments shooting macro.
https://leofoto.com/products_detail.php?id=352
I replaced the BH-100 with this BH-300 and it's a world of difference. Same head just bigger and more contact surface for finer friction control adjustment on the ball with heavier lenses.

I case you are interested here's a great macro tripod I love using.

Thank you. I use focus peaking a lot and always for macro. Do you use it? It's pretty easy and becomes habit fast but it takes practice to fine tune. It's improved my fine focus a lot since I got in the habit of doing it and works with all the lenses I use. If you don't use it yet, let me know and I'll send you the settings you need and the process I use.-

Wed 10-Aug-22 09:38 PMI have tried focus peeking but stra gely not on the 105. My old macro lens was the 200 mm f4 and I always manually focused that. I was just fooling around outside when I saw tiny insects in a black eyed Susan, so I just grabbed my camera crouched down and got as close as possible and mashed my back focus button and shot away between wind gusts. I'll be glad to look at anything you want to share about this lens.Bob Baldassano

Yes. The image of the bug im message 2 of this thread is a simple 10 frame stack. My first ever. It was way easier than I thought it would be.
Stacking happens in the camera though. O0ps should have said bracketing happens in the camera. The lens doesn't care. You won't have much luck stacking anything that moves though. Lazy lounging bugs yes...active feeding bugs or bugs on plants swaying in the wind forget about it. Focus bracketing is a pretty cool tool even if the images won't stack.-

Insects are hard to stack if they are alive and moving. Only works well with lazy or dormant bugs. Or dead ones.-

Focus peaking has a lot to do with bokeh and precision at all focus ranges on the scale if you decide to use it. If you begin using it and practice with it you will literally be able to see depth of field in images and be able to front focus or back focus for desired effects.
It's still a work in progress for me and like anything else as I use it more the less I have to think about it and it becomes second nature.
Just as a side note, I almost always use autofocus but as soon as autofocus is acquired I tweak the focus ring a tiny bit to review what the autofocus selection focus peaking looks like and adjust if I don't like it. For most non macro shots the autofocus is right where it is supposed to be but I still confirm it if I care about the shot being just right.
It eliminates all the shots when I am in tight and AF finds the bugs back or butt and I want the whiskers sharp. Just roll the focus peaking forward onto the whiskers until I like it and press the release. It's takes a fraction of a second because the focus is already close.
It works the same on anything distant and let's me slide the bokeh around and work with aperature. Instead of stopping down to make sure what I want is focused and at the same time focus stuff I may want soft the focus peaking contour patterns allow me to "see" and decide where I want the focus to begin and end.
I use the focus scale in the viewfinder along with focus peaking. When doing macro I have my manual focus ring set to react very slowly. It's setting F9 "Focus Ring Rotation Range" on the Z9. It let's me slide the contours over the subject very precisely and make minute adjustments to DOF as well as focus.
To me FP is kind of like using ultrasound or radar only in the visible light spectrum. I have to think it probably started life as a military precision targeting system technology concept and has led to a lot of tanks and aircraft being splashed.
It's helped me and I hope you get some use out of it too. Happy shoting, Bob.-

This skipper was resting on the black eye of a black-eyed susan. It was no bigger than a thumbnail. The black eye was less than 3/4 of an inch for scale. I shot at what I thought was the closest focus distance using my back button to gain focus. It was shot handheld between wind gusts with a Nikon Z7 and the Z 105 mm f/4 S lens at f/8, 1/250 s, Auto ISO 320. The NEF was opened in Nikon Studio to create a flat TIFF which was further processed in PS 2022 with the PPW panel installed.

Hi Bob. Just a remark about losing the distance of a 200. You really haven't lost it.
Do you have one?
The 200macro is high on my list of next lenses to buy but it got knocked done the list this summer. First came the 105 then the 70-200 S lens. I was really happy with the 105 for macro so I bought a Nikon 80-400mm 4.5-5.6 G instead of a 200 or 180 macro. If Niokon ever announces a longer macro S lens the 200 comes off my shopping list.
If you want the extra distance just move back and shoot. You can compose it just like you would with 200. There's magnifier button on you camera I use to move in on the subject. I also can compose in FX and crop by shifting to DX or 1:1 or whatever works for me. I DX when you want to get tighter on the subject to shoot. Crop out the edges as required with no loss of sharpness. I know the 200 is outstanding but this lens if a tech lens and the glass in it is decades ahead.
Not sure what a 200 weighs but know it's alot and the 105 is a feather. I can always tell I am shooting an older lens when I start to get Popeye muscles in my right arm from lugging them around. Tiny light Z lens are amazing. I know you probably have some already but anyone who hasn't used any of the cheap little Z lens, including the DX 50-250 and DX 16-50 pancake lens you don't know they are missing. Some amazing lenses for under 300 bucks.
Practice, practice, practice, Rob.-

Mon 15-Aug-22 11:45 AMBob, yes the 200 mm is heavier and slower to focus. It only worked in manual mode on the Z7. So I sold it. I do use the zoom button on my Z7 to check focus and with so many pixels to play with you can make severe crops. If I want to stand back, I too have the Z70 to 200 and the 2x converter or even my 300 PF f/4 with FTZ and 3 TCS. All are amazing on the Z7. I think I am done buying lenses. I might consider a New Body if it stays as small as the Z7 and has better focusing. Otherwise I am very happy with my Z7 especially since I got it at a great price.Bob Baldassano
