KnightPhoto Nikonian since 18th Dec 2006Wed 09-Jan-19 12:58 AMYes 82mm filters, but on the plus side Nikon notes this is the first 14mm that accepts filters
Many including myself have said from the start the 14-30 is a lens that interests us greatly. One of the reasons I navigated away from FX DSLRs was the cumulative size/weight of the lens kit needed to achieve high quality. This lens coming in at 1-pound and similar form factor to the 24-70 looks pretty promising. The cost is no giveaway price but once again we see with the S-line it looks remarkable from the published MTF.
Without trying to seem unjustifiably positive, it does appear to me Nikon is clearly demonstrating a pattern of measurable advantage for the Z-mount. We see that in all 4 of the announced lenses so far as we'll as with the hyperbolic f/0.95 monster coming soon
From this I infer a positive trend for the Z-line as a whole. Still some work to do for Nikon, but the other development announcement today of RAW-video (again a world first in a hybrid stills/video cam), an Eye-AF mode, and the CF-E card compatibility all appear to be adding the right kinds of things from a momentum perspective. Good to see Nikon taking a continuous improvement approach, it is needed to maintain competitive edge in a very tough market. I also think the Z6 videographers kit announced today (despite the eye-watering all at once price) is another chink in the armour. I'd love to have all those components and it should add some incremental sales into the mix. It looks like Nikon is in it for the long game...

Hektor Nikonian since 08th Jan 2008Wed 09-Jan-19 02:17 PMSteve:
Nikon could have come out with a mirrorless camera - D850 like - without the mirror and it would not have made any difference in performance. Not having the mirror and a big empty space, they cold have provided a number of options that we do not have today. They could have introduced two cameras one with the Z-Mount and the other with the F-Mount; Nikon didn't, because that would have resulted in less lens sales. Anyway, I'm very happy with my Z7 - best camera I ever had.
The 14-30 was in my wish list. The only thing I was complaining is that I kept ~ a dozen B+W UV filters, of different filter threads, the 82mm is the only one I did not have . I'll purchase the 14-30, but I have to recover from the purchase of the Z7, ZTF adapter, the Z 24-70, and the Z 35 first. I'm selling a bunch of equipment to finance everything.

I just Pre-Ordered the Z 14-30 from Amazon and also bought the B+W 82mm UV filter from B&H. According to Amazon, the Z 14-30 release date is April 30. The UV filter will be waiting for the lens .

Nice Hektor! It looks like another stellar Z lens. I don't get where a small number of people are saying Nikon is not realizing the promise of the Z-mount. A one-pound 14-30 sharp into the corners and able to take filters sounds pretty promising to me
And combine it with the 24-70 f/4 that is a truly great 1-2 kit.
I definitely will get it also, hopefully not too much later than you, I would love to have it for summer. Since I am also digesting my Z6/24-70 initial kit purchase I haven't pre-ordered yet. Perhaps I should though as I suspect this lens amongst all others could be hard to get initially, it seems to be on the mind of nearly all Z-owners. Hmmm thinking I better get on it...

Like you, I don't get it either. I couldn't be happier with my Z7 - Amazing! It is head and shoulders over my ex-X-T2. So much so, that I already sold it. The X-T2 is a hell of a camera and the Fuji lenses are incredible. That is how good the Z7 and Z lenses are, at least for me. I only have two sell two more Fuji lenses (27mm f/2.8 and 35mm f/1.4) and my fire sale is complete. I will never do another fire sale ever again - ever!
The Z7 has 46MP and already my very fast computer is beginning to slow down, during PP, if I shoot raw. They are talking about a 100+ MP camera (Canon at least) for the next generation of mirrorless cameras. Forget it! I'm not upgrading my computer also. Therefore, the Z7 is more than enough.
I could not sell the D5500-IR. The highest offer I got was $306 for the whole system including the DX 18-55. It had a reserve; therefore I kept it - it was a no-brainer. I had 18 people watching it! They watched until it disappeared.
The Z 14-30 is not going to be available until April 30. I will get the lens around May. I won't be charged until then. My advise is that if you are thinking of getting it, pre-order it now. Otherwise, you might have to wait an eternity.

Wow... that's a long wait. Seems everything I want from Nikon is like this lately. I waited almost a year for my D850! And it appears my 500mm PF is going to be nearly the same. Now this... ACHT!

I relied on a Sigma superzoom on my old camera (a D90) for tele work and it is not an option on my Z6. I didn't realise how much I'd miss being able to go past 70mm, though moving from DX to FX probably had a hand in that. I want to get a 70-200/4 or a 70-300 before my next trip and recover from that purchase, then I'll get the 14-30.
I guess the plus side is that this will force me to wait until reviews are out instead of just pre-ordering it.

I pre-ordered the 14-30 the day it was announced. I am looking to downsize my gear. I was diagnosed with chronic rotater cuff deterioration, after I complained to my doctor about constant shoulder pain and loss of strength. The Z7 and its light lenses fit the bill for me.
If you are considering the 70-200 f/4, another option is the new "P" series 70-300 FX lens. It is light and has excellent IQ. I plan on carrying the 24-70, 14-30, and 70-300 with the adapter with me to England and Iceland this summer. That should cover me for 95% of any images I may want to capture.John

rosewood_ltd Nikonian since 10th Sep 2008Wed 06-Mar-19 12:18 PMGoing to pre-order today. Will be in Spain and France at the end of May, so hopefully I will have it in hand before then.
I would echo the recommendation of the new 70-300 as an alternative mid-tele zoom. I have been using it with my Z7 and have been very happy with the results. I shoot it primarily aperture priority at f8 to f10 and have gotten consistent, tack sharp images. Also, the combo of lens VR and IBIS allows insanely low hand-held shutter speeds, even at max focal lengths.Russ

KnightPhoto Nikonian since 18th Dec 2006Wed 06-Mar-19 11:01 PMInteresting and good to hear about the performance of the 70-300, thanks Russ. Hope you get the 14-30 on time, I've ordered it too. Locally here have heard April 30 but that assumes you are high up on your retailers preorder list.
At this point I like the idea of a combination of the f/4 zooms and a mix of primes (S-Line primes, F-primes, AI/AIS primes, 3rd party Samyang/Rokinon MF, maybe an Art prime (mostly too heavy but I do like the feel of their 135mm), and thinking even some non-Nikon vintage bargain lenses with adapters such as older Minolta lenses).
I like the idea of the Z-mount being so adaptable. If I can find bargains and accumulate them over time I don't mind having some overlapping lenses for my Z-kit, whereas in the past with my F-mount kit I was pretty thorough about not owning lenses that were similar. E.g. when I bought my first 70-200 VR1 I sold a bunch of Nikon AF-D primes such as the 85 f/1.8D, 135, and 180.
Also, I had a bunch of big FX lenses up until recently but sold them in anticipation of going Nikon mirrorless. So for me, the new f/2.8 S-line zooms and f/1.2 primes aren't a big draw, at least that's what I say now. But I'm still keenly interested to hear about their performance, I expect they will be very good.

I like your concept of using adapters to mix lenses. Although, I have never used one, I hear great things about the Sony E series lenses, especially the 100-400.
As primary a nature photographer with travel being secondarily, I have no real need for f/2.8 and wider lenses. When I first got into Nikon ten years ago, I bought the big f/ 2.8 lenses, because everybody said you needed them. With few exceptions, I never opened the lens that wide. After dropping my 70-200 f/2.8 in the ocean while in Iceland, I never replaced it. The 70-300 became its replacement.
I am considering getting a manual focus 14-18 mm f1.8 S mount prime for astro photography. Currently, I use the 17-35 f/2.8. However, it is big and bulky and needs the FTZ adapter.John

Lucky you! Mine's on BO from Adorama. Are you planning on using filters with it, and if so, what system? I ask because the screw-on 72mm polarizer I got for the 24-70 f/4 vignettes at 24 mm. Having to adopt a Lee or NiSi system hits my pocketbook even harder, but that may be a fate accompli.
FYI, you can add the lens to your cart on Nikon USA (although it says the lens is on BO), so I may just buy it from them and take the sales tax hit if I don't hear from Adorama in the next, say, 48 hrs.-

The rep said she couldn't see in the computer where I was on the waiting list and said she had no way to see/guess when I would receive my order. The only thing she said was call back Friday and see if they received any inventory. I hung up pretty frustrated with B&H and called Berger Bros. gbheron Nikonian since 22nd Apr 2007Sat 18-May-19 09:40 AMGood morning, Steve,
I have had a request in to B&H for notification when they have the 14-30mm S available, and also the same request to the closest store dedicated to cameras (64 miles). I got a call yesterday over bluetooth while driving to get a shingles vaccination; it was the wonderful news that a 14-30mm had landed in my “local” shop. I told the caller to put my name on the box because I would drive down immediately after my medical appointment. Unfortunately, it has been raining for several days, and the outlook is for it to continue for a few more, but I have got the lens!
Happy Nikon shooting,
RandyVisit my Nikonians gallery.

rosewood_ltd Nikonian since 10th Sep 2008Tue 21-May-19 10:38 AMReceived my lens from BB yesterday. I saw the lens listed on their web site about 10d ago or so. I also cancelled my B&H order and went with BB. It turned out that although the lens listed on the web site as in stock, it wasn't. Brad called me later the day I ordered it to let me know it would be a bit delayed. While I was not happy that the web site was not accurate as to stock availability, they did get it to me as quickly as possible.
My advice is to call to confirm that the lens is actually available before jumping off any cliffs.Russ

It sounds like inventory is starting to make its way to the big stores like B&H finally. That's great news for everyone that's been waiting for so long.

bike2kayak Nikonian since 08th Apr 2007Wed 05-Jun-19 12:34 PMInspirational photo! I see your focus point was at 11m, did you manually focus? I would have just put focus point on rock buttress of bend and foreground would be out of focus. Did you use a hyperfocal calculation or guesstimate?Visit my Nikonians gallery

I made up my mind. I will not sell any of my lenses nor will I duplicate any of them. For example, I have the Tamron 85mm f/1.8 VC. I will not purchase the Z 85mm f/1.8 when it comes out. I will use the Tamron with the FTZ adapter. The lens I'm interested in is the future Z 24mm f/1.8 S.
In a month or two, I will upgrade my I-Mac 27 to the I-Mac 27 with Retina 5K display (early 2019.) It will come with:
1. 3.6 GHz Intel Core i9 Eight-Core
2. RAM of 64GB
3. Internal diskdrive of 2TB SSD
4. AMD Radeon Pro Vega 48
It is not going to be cheap but it will be lighting fast. The other thing I'm pondering is wether to upgrade the Leica Q to the Q2. The main difference is the sensor. The Q2 comes with a 46 MP sensor. The Q1 shoots at:
28mm - 24 MP
35mm - 15 MP
50mm - 7.5 MP
The Q2:
28mm - 46 MP
35mm - 30 MP
50mm - 15 MP
75mm - 7.5 MP
I shoot a lot at 35mm. It will cost me, after selling the Q, ~ $3,500 to upgrade. The Q2 is the only Leica I will ever need. If I can get ~ $1,200 for my Nikon D5500 IR system, I will upgrade to the Q2. I know I said that I will not sell any of my lenses. However, this is different. I will be selling for good the IR system not to replace it with another IR system - no more IR photography.
As I stated above, the other purchase is the Z 24mm f/1.8 S. However, if I am forced to choose because of monetary considerations, it will be the Leica Q2.
