I would not expect to see them added with firmware as many technologies are related to processing speed and other components. I also see limited development of software for fully deployed cameras, although they could modify that business model with paid upgrades. I would readily pay $100-150 for a software update to my D850 that deploys some of these new capabilities.
I see a lot of technology that is being used across lens mount systems from the Nikon One (V1 etc.), Nikon F Mount (D850), and Nikon Z mount (Z7). I fully expect features that are software driven as opposed to physically driven to continue.
Silent Shooting - Available in V1, D850, and Z7
High Speed Silent Burst - Available in V1, D850 and Z7
Focus Shift - Available in D850 and Z7
Focus using Live View - Available in V1, D850, and Z7
Zooming with Live View - Available in V1, D850, and Z7
EVF - Available in V1, Z7 native and V2 and V3 with separate attachable unit
Viewfinder display of settings - All Nikons
Focus peaking - Available in D850 and Z7
Face Tracking - Available in D850 and Z7 as well as others
Bluetooth / Wifi / Snapbridge - Available in D850, D500, and Z7 but continued evolution
Highlight warning in live display - Available in Z7 only - could be deployed in DSLR LiveView
I'm sure there are more technologies crossing between formats. It's actually harder to think of technologies that are only in mirrorless outside of physical reasons.
Given the benefits of an EVF some of the time, the one big technology I'd like to see in a DSLR is the EVF. It was done with a separate device in the V2/V3. I'd expect to see the device in the $350 range, so it is pricey, but can bring a lot of function for replacing the LiveView display with constant viewfinder use.
The improvements in focus shift, face tracking and video are incremental, and will likely be included in future cameras both DSLR and Mirrorless.Eric Bowles

- Absolutely agree otherwise it become difficult to manage all the sub components across platforms, making improvements in one vs another. Of course the addition/change needs to sell more cameras.
- Oh absolutely love the idea of face tracking and an EVF.

The question is whether it's possible in the physical space available given there is a mirror and mirror box. I expect other aspects of in-body stabilization would be possible.
There are some big advantages of a DSLR body that can record aperture selection and meter old lenses. The Z series has set a direction of current and future compatibility - not as much with the really old glass.Eric Bowles

I personally don't want an Electronic Viewfinder on my DSLR, being able to use the viewfinder to see what is in frame without switching the camera on is a useful feature. I can turn the camera on, use a trigger and leave it run for days without draining the battery.
It would be nice to have more info superimposed inside the viewfinder when wanted, that could be switched off to save battery.

I cannot think of anything save for having a Z mount and then having people put on a FTZ adapter and that seems like a non starter.
Maybe there is nothing. Stray thoughts perhaps.
