This should make for some really fast, really compact storage.
Also,
I like the phyiscal durability of xqd, and I hope everything they say is correct about CFexpress being backward compatible with XQD, I just hope the D500/850 will run CFexpress cards when they finally show up on the market, it was worrying me a bit when Sony was the only real source for XQD cards.Visit my Nikonians gallery.

Thu 13-Sep-18 09:04 AMI had not seen that, thanks. It makes me wonder if the SDexpress has the same scalability as CFexpress. They don't mention that, while the article about CFexpress features that capability. In the context of the Z series cameras, at least for now, the CFexpress information is more relevant and somewhat exciting to anticipate.

Fri 14-Sep-18 10:18 AMSDExpress is a long way from reality. Right now even SD UHS-II has low adoption. It's only in one slot of the Sony A7rIII, it was just implemented in the new Canon Mirrorless and the Fuji XT-3, but utilization is low. It's very hard to find a laptop with a UHS-II SD slot.
SDExpress requires a new interface in the camera to take advantage of the higher speed. Camera and card manufacturers will both have to decide when the right time is to move forward. You can't move forward without both sides.
You're probably looking at 3+ years before SDExpress is deployed in cameras. They just completed an upgrade cycle, so it will be 2-3 years before the next cycle.
CFEXpress is right around the corner with cards shipping this year and cameras being deployed that can use the cards. In addition, memory prices are falling rapidly so we should see lower cost CFExpress cards soon. The current Nikon cameras will require a firmware update for CFExpress. Even then, that does not mean they will have any faster write speed because write speed depends on the processing engine and bus in the camera - hardware that can't be changed with firmware. I expect the Z7/6 may have CFExpress optimized hardware, but that is still an unknown.Eric Bowles

Thu 20-Sep-18 05:45 PMFascinating. That sort of answers my question about number of lanes planned for our cameras, as it implies that at this time CFexpress will be 2 lanes, while they are working on a spec for two additional lanes. Whether these additional lanes would be doable in our existing camera card slots isn't really addressed. Still, the two lane CFexpress is a pretty fat pipe compared to what we've had in the past. I can see why Nikon selected it.

Fri 21-Sep-18 07:03 AMMy understanding is XQD 2.0 is two lanes, so while CFEXpress is faster, the hardware format is the same as XQD. A CFExpress card in a XQD 1.0 camera would only be able to use the single lane so it would be limited to current XQD 1.0 speeds.
There was an interesting statement that tends to confirm earlier speculation that cameras are designed for CFExpress.
"Some camera vendors have adopted a forward-looking approach by incorporating the hardware required to support a dual lane CFexpress card–in the short term supporting XQD through a firmware update only."
This has been expected with the Z7 and Z6, but may apply to some other cameras.Eric Bowles
