Welding arc damage to Z-7 sensors?

Are there any special preparations on photographing welding arc (MIG and TIG, stick) in action? I'll be using my normal welding helmet with strong eye protection, but do I need to worry about the sensor? I'll be far enough away to avoid the sparks that are generated.

Sat 30-Jan-21 06:13 AMThe sensor is not likely to be damaged but it is hard to get exposure right unless starting from a very small aperture and moving wider to the correct exposure. Duration of exposure would have the most effect slow very long exposures should be used with welding glass. To get spark trails an exposure of 1/10 to 1/4th second exposure would be the most dramatic if using a welding glass filter. If no filter glass is used, 1/1000 or faster is a good starting duration but no spark trails would be seen, or if seen they will be very short and less interesting. Arc welding generates a wide spectrum of visible and UV light but the UV output is not energetic enough to damage a lens or sensor.

Fri 05-Feb-21 03:04 PMPlease do get personal protection. "Arc Eyes" is a hideously painful nighttime adventure. Never - ever stare at a welder without goggles or protection for yourself. This happens after you have spent part of a day being bad and then try to go to sleep. I would agree it is not a camera issue.Visit my Nikonians gallery.

I don't think arc welding is any brighter than the sun, and we're able to shoot (with filters and LiveView!) the sun without any trouble.
I realize now that on a Z you don't have the eye problem since even in the viewfinder you're looking at the LCD and not the welding/sun in the first place.

My first thought was to recommend that solar film, which protects against the worst of the sun.
Ive seen it available many places. 1000 Thousand Oaks produces it not only in sheets, but in filters. I just bought a 52mm for my 800mm Nikon this week.

I've not shot welding with my Z camera, but I have done it with my Samsung Note 8 phone, with good results. Slo-mo video is especially cool.
