Wed 27-Jan-21 02:15 PMF mount lenses cannot be adapted to the Z. With the F mount lenses the image is focused at a distance from the rear element that accommodates the space taken by the mirror box on the DSLR. If mounted on a Z body the image would be focused behind the body. The FTZ adds back the space used by the mirror box, so the F lenses work on the Z.
Regarding the 70-200. The reviews I've read comparing the 70-200 f2.8 E F-Mount (which I have and it is amazing) and the 70-200 f2.8 S Z-Mount suggest they are very close in performance. See Thom Hogan's review below.

In it Thom suggests that if you have the E version you might well be happy staying with it with a Z body. -

Good to read your technical feedback.
It does make more sense to me when i read it twice!! Ha.
As i was saying,i was wondering if somebody has done it the other way.
I've gone through the review. Good to see that there's only a slight difference between the FL and the S.
Due to the closed frontier here, it will take quite some time to get the FL. I was really looking forward to this lens,but i changed my mind when i heard about the S.
Happy with your post and link Luke. Truly.
After some time will jump onto the Z camera. Because my D810 still has a long way to go. Unless my trusty D700 dies! It has served me so well and sooo long.

Not in this case.
Even if you could make an adapter that physically could mount the Z-Flange, which is 55mm in diameter to the F-mount flange on the camera, which is 44mm in diameter, you then have the problem of the distance from the flange to the focal plane. The F-mount flange to focal distance is 46.5mm, while the Z-mount is 16mm. So even if your adapter had no thickness (not physically possible), the Z lens would be focusing well ahead of the sensor, probably at the front of the mirror in the down position.
I suppose you could rip apart the front of the DSLR, remove the mirror and make a mount inside the camera. I'm not sure how you would focus. You would also probably need to reengineer the camera's firmware. Also, how would you mount and dismount the lens?
The least of the problems would be the crop issue, similar to mounting a FX lens on a DX body.
So, if someone wants to sacrifice a camera and a Z mount, has lots of spare time and machining skill, I am sure you could rig up something that physically fits together, it just would never actually be able to take a photo.
But from a commercial point-of-view, this is a non-starter for Nikon or any 3rd party equipment manufacturer.Mick

Thu 28-Jan-21 02:47 PMYou can fit a 350 Chevy in a Model T - so with enough cash I'm sure the ZTF could be done - or for the same price you could get a Z6ii, a Z7ii and a bunch of Z lenses. I do think the ZTF camera would have to be highly chrome plated too though!

Just to be contrarian, I think it could be done but it would be a total kluge. Consider an F lens focuses at a certain distance, let's call it "f". A Z lens focuses at a shorter distance, let's call it "z", which is shorter because there is no mirror box. For simplicity, let's ignore the diameter difference between the two series of lenses. The FTZ adapter works because it moves the F lens forward a distance "y" (f-z=y). In order to make a Z lens work on an F body, one would either need to move the lens into the body, which would cause a conflict with the mirror, or do something to make it focus an extra distance y. I think this could be done with an adapter containing a lens. An interesting mental exercise but I just don't think I'd want a big hunk of duct tape holding my camera and lens together.

I believe it is possible to make an adapter to mount a Z lens on an F mount body. It will require lens elements inside the adapter. Image quality will likely suffer.

I do believe that it would be possible to use the z lens on a dslr if they wanted to. With or without loss in image quality. The nippons simply didn't have the desire. Economical law governs all. May be we are moving towards the end of dslr or to say it in another way,mirrorless is the present and the future. Lightweight cameras and lens are the future.

I read about some F lenses using the adapter to be mounted on the
Mirrorless cameras.
But has someone done the opposite?
What are the % compatibility to use the z lens on a dslr? A D700 or D810?
I would like to jump into the mirrorless world later but need to replace my 1st version 70-200 now before it lets me down.
Don't want to buy the ED Version for the moment and use it on the z camera. More so as i heard the specs of the z 70 200 and other Z lenses. Their sharpness etc.
Am i going in the right direction?
Would like to hear your thoughts.
